Difference between 5.1 and 5.1 discrete

Hi guys,
Could anybody clarify this for me please?
What is the difference between 5.1 and 5.1 discrete?
Thanks a lot,

You're probably referring to 2 channel dolby surround (matrixed LCRS) versus 5.1 discrete.

Well there are 5.1 streams as in what is sitting on most of your DVD's. That is an integrated and compressed 5.1 as opposed to 6 separate feeds.

AC3 is still discreet though as each channel is separate.

How is AC3 discreet [sic]? (usually spelt "discrete")

Because each channel within the AC3 file is separate and as opposed to matrixed Dolby Surround.

AC3 is just a codec. Just like DTS. Once it goes through a decoder, it sends the proper channels to the proper speakers.

If you were to listen to the AC3 encoded file, you wouldn't like what you heard.

I know full well what an AC3 is!

A matrixed file never unfolds to 5.1

Delivering discrete 5.1 means delivering 6 separate audio files. Not an AC3, not a DTS, not a Dolby E file.

Yes, that is true. Though I've yet to be asked to deliver a 5.1 discrete.
Just a 5.1, LTRT ect.

If they want anything else, Dolby E, AC3 (unless its an MO), that's out of my hands. I've never had to deliver those.

I assume you mean fold downs.
