Finally Bought UAD-2 - which three plugs to choose?

Years ago when Mackie distributed the UAD-1 I had one. Long story short I sold it when my new machine didn't have PCI.

So they're doing a promotion where you get Neve, API, SSL and 600 series plugs free so I took the plunge.

I can choose three free plugs with the bundle I bought. I really want the A-800 and/or the Ampex (I'm going to AB them and decide) what other plugs would you choose? I'm thinking of grabbing the more expensive ones that I think I'll want asn freebies.

Hi,

Good luck choosing just 3:D

1176 classic limiter collection is a must ...(The whole analogue classics bundle is on offer right now @ about 1/5 normal price and includes all the greats)

All reverbs especially the Lexicons are the best
The tape emulations are the best
Ocean way studios is awesome
The Manley stuff is awesome

You're going to have to demo and find what you like the best

For me:
Akg bx20. Amazing 60s reverb. Really.
Fairchild comp
Galaxy tape echo.
I just sold my uad stuff and the akg is the one I really miss

Re: Finally Bought UAD-2 - which three plugs to choose?

API neve 1073 and SSL

Re: Finally Bought UAD-2 - which three plugs to choose?

I'd get the plugins which are unique to UAD, like the AKG spring, Dytronics chorus, MXR Flanger etc.

I'd avoid getting plugins which you can buy much cheaper natively like many of the Plugin Alliance/Brainworx offerings, the Eventide Harmoniser, Softube Dynamite and such.

All that said, you might want to consider bread and butter plugins you might use all the time? The newer blue stripe 1176 sounds good to my ears.

Re: Finally Bought UAD-2 - which three plugs to choose?

If I only had 3 plugins I would choose atleast 2 Unison ones like API CS and maybe a SSL4000 CS as they sound fantastic and maybe the Studer 800!

Re: Finally Bought UAD-2 - which three plugs to choose?

I would get the 1073.

For sure but that plugin is like 70% less than the more expensive ones so even though 1073 is a must I would rather buy it afterwards for less money.

PS. are my eyes screwing me over or Is there one chrisdee and one crizdee here ?!! Never noticed this before :D

Agreed. I was going to mention that.

Go for the expensive plugins with your three and maximise your bang for $$$.

Re: Finally Bought UAD-2 - which three plugs to choose?

I think the Ampex 102 is a must. It's on the stereo buss of EVERY mix.

Studer on individual channels or groups might also be considered a must.

These two plugs alone make a HUGE difference in a mix, often making it so you need less EQ/Dyn in general. It's amazing how much of ITB mixing is spent trying to recreate what analog has always done for us naturally.

The Helios channelstrip is another standout and one of our top selling plugins.

The new 480 is blowing people's minds.

Whatever you choose, you're going to love them!! Congrats!

Probably worth looking up the CPU usage, especially for some of these newer plugins. Depending what hardware you have you might find you’re out of chips pretty quickly.

The price you see on the bundle reflects discounts given due to portions of the bundle you already own. For example, the price shown for me is $449 because I own the Fairchild, and brings mine down to 1/2 of normal price.

Or did I not understand your post correctly? :o

You bought the bundle that includes the Neve, Api, SSL and 600 for free, and then the extra Custom 3-pack on top of that? If so, I'd lean heavily towards the Reverbs mention by others as 1 or 2 of the additional plugs. Same for the tape.

I'm thinking of doing that same deal. I've got the Studer 800 already, but not the Ampex. That one will find it's way onto the list. However, I have all those Unison plugs in the offering, so I have to choose from a limited subset of the rest. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't already own some of the gems in the list. (like the Helios, Lexicon 224)

Ahh forgot the deal with the api ssl neve and 610. The u get the analog classic legacies.
So then definitely get the lexicon 480l

Then the ssl g comp or the master desk for the master buss

Then chandler eq or Manley voxbox or Manley passive.

I had one of those, "how is he getting that price???" moments before I remembered they did that. I think it's pretty nifty that they do that dynamic bundle adjustments thing, too. I might have some additional Softube and Izotope if they did. Alas. :(

EMT140 reverb is on every one of my sessions. It’s a really great plate and has built in eq so you can do the band limiting thing with it.

The UAD guy says that cause you are going to be a very happy camper. Good choices but soon expect to be making more purchases

LOL ... so better start saving money for those purchases right away!! You gonna need it as UA Plugins are like a serious addiction :D Maybe a bit more expensive thought hahaha

We own almost every plugin UA have except for a few bass amps and guitar amps. Use the UA and 4 Apollo units everyday here and we LOVE it!

Hi !

Hard thing to do .

My 3 not so easy to choose 3 are lexicon 224 , SSL g buss and sonnox eq . Can mix a song anyday with them . Of course there are other excellent tool there like others mentioned here so i wish luck too :-)

Re: Finally Bought UAD-2 - which three plugs to choose?

Thanks everyone. I ended up getting the Ampex and Studer as well as the Lexicon 480. I also purchased the SSL Buss Comp because it was only $50 due to me having the other SSL plugs in the collection I guess. They also gave me the CE-1 for free for signing up for the emails but I have a real CE-1 already, this may get used more though!

Re: Finally Bought UAD-2 - which three plugs to choose?

I got in on this deal. I have an Octo coming with the 3-plug Custom bundle attached. I already have the API Vision, 1073 and the SSL-E strips. I do not have the 610A nor do I care to, but as they say, rules is rules and I'm getting the 610A. I do get to choose 3 plugs from a somewhat limited subset of their plugins to replace the three I currently have. Not an ideal situation as the list is rather limited. This is the list.
https://help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/360020520632
From the list, I already have the:
Brigade Chorus
Fairchild 660/670
Helios 69(is divine!)
Lexicon 224
Studer A800

What I do not have are the components that make up the rest of the analog Classics package - mkII versions of the 1176, LA-2A and the Pultec EQ. I hate to give up 3 plugs to get what I was going to get the next time they went on sale, but whatever. I already have the primo selections from the list. Not a whole lot choices left in the normal $249 - $299 range.

One of the less expensive ones I do want is the Cooper Time Cube delay. I'll save that for when I have a decent coupon t use. It's $149 normally. I really have no clue about the others various delays, reverbs and other utilities/entries in that range.

Now for the Custom-3 bundle. Those are unlimited. In addition to the ones listed above, I have:
Neve 88RS
Manley VOX BOX, Vari-Mu and Massive Passive
Lexicon 480
Ampeg SVT-VR Bass upgrade

I'd rather not get something that is otherwise part of a bundle I have on my radar for when they go on sale. Defeats the purpose of the Custom pack a little bit. With that in mind, I've narrowed down the list to these. The first two are in order. The 3rd I'm undecided on.
#1: Ampex 102
#2: Emp Labs Distressor
#3: Massenburg MDWEQ5
the rest.....
Sonnox Oxford Limiter
Neve 1081 EQ
Neve 33102 EQ
Neve 33609 Compressor
API 2500 Comp
API EQs
Sonnox Oxford EQ
Chandler Limiter (dup'd by Waves Abbey Roads Mstr?)
Chandler Mastering Compressor (dup'd by Waves Abbey Roads Mstr?)
Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor (Not like I need another....)

The API and Neve entries are ones I plan to get at some point just to complete a couple sort of mini-systems I have in mind.

And to think, I was nearly done with all of this nonsense before buying the Apollo. To be certain, I'm still more thrilled than I am mad. :D
