Waverider V2 - just tried it.

So i'm working on a bunch of broadcast gigs and I needed a way to save some time during editorial. I got a copy of WAVERIDER... I took a 50+ minute edit that we did for a project "Super Sellers" and exported as an OMF to protools 10. Then I spent about 5 minutes going through the truckload of clips and doing simple clip level gain in order to match all the gain levels, well, at least in the ballpark( 50+ minutes and 90% of clips are less than 5 seconds. ) . Then I mucked with WAVERIDER a couple of times ( about 5 more minutes )... then fired it off. It ran the project duration, no technical issues. When it completed, I shifted the new volume automation forward in time a few milliseconds... and BINGO! It did a great job of leveling the dialogue. Saved me a few hours. All I had to do was fix two spots where it needed some help, drop a very light compression on the track and print. I'm actually rather amazed at how well it worked. Going to start using it as a first pass on all my long format stuff! I was able to share with my client with no issues... I'll do a final polish during mix, but it just shaved a bunch of work from my project time.

nice to find a tool that works as offered.

It is very cool, but does take some tweaking to get the settings right. It can ride the fader quite fast on transients! Good idea to slide the automation up a bit after making a pass.

Only project I used it on I used it post compression, which left the hottest regions (didnt have clip gain yet) a little squashed compared to the more natural fader riding of the rest. Next time I would like to try it pre compression and with clip gain level matching the regions first. I havent messed with it enough to figure out exactly what the target ratio is changing. Can anyone clear this up?

Also, when the manual mentions setting the target level the talk about LKFS, but they don't specifically say thats what the target levels are LKFS. I'd be curious to know from someone who has a loudness meter handy if the traget level you shoot for matches the measures LKFS loudness.

I wish he'd make a PC version

Thanks Georgia, I am glad you are enjoying the ride! :)

We can't really specify that because it largely depends on the source levels and other processing. But a healthy recorded dialogue will sit around -24 LKFS with Wave Rider set around -21/-22.
In my template I use -21 output and this gives me -24LKFS with other processing like eq, limiting etc going on afterwards.

That determines how the low level signals should be treated, if target ratio is set looser then the low levels won't be hyped as much.

Do you have plans for an AAX version?

Yes but not DSP.

Any hints for us as to when PC might be ready?

I can think of a few uses for trace mode already

Hopefully before the summer hits the Northern Hemisphere.

I'm loving this plug-in.... the interface is a bit "cutsie" for me, but i'm a minimalist... :p

One request... A Timer.

a variable that has a level input (TRIGGER LEVEL)( 0db to -70db) and a time input (CUTOUT PERIOD)( 0.00 to 30.00 seconds) that automatically drops the level automation to dead zero after the CUTOFF PERIOD of time when the audio level on the track is less than or equal to TRIGGER LEVEL.

I highly recommend this one! :-)
cheers
