Auratone
 

I am not sure if I am spelling this right, but back in the ancient days I used to record a lot in an old studio that was equipped with a pair of Auratone speakers. They were really crappy sounding but the idea was to use them to compare your mix against the regular monitors. They sounded like old car radio speakers, and believe me, if you could get your mix to sound good on these, then it will sound great on anything.
I havent seen them in years but i would like to have a set for my studio.
OK all you old salts out there - any ideas on where I might find some? Of perhaps another cheapo secondary monitor system to do the same thing?

I knew there would be someone who would know what I was talking about!
Even back in the day the auratones were referred to with a wink because they were so cruddy. I guess that dates me back to the days when an 8-track went ka-chunk, and the best car stereos had them blasting through an ac-delco speaker in the dash.

you may well find a lot of big studio's that have 'em on regular call by the dozen, if covered in cobwebs. the black ones are the best as they're magnetically shielded.

i wouldn't recommend using then for much except mono tv (or fm) balance or placing them under the SSL or Neve at odd angles and intervals to hear how your 'mix mojo' is coming along. i swear, in a few years time, NS10's will be thrown into the same basket as Auratones...

i reckon if you walked into almost any big studio proclaiming "i wanna buy a set of aurotones from ya", you would be met with laughter and they just might even give you a pair. [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img]

if not and you really, really want them, i can arrange to ship you a pair from musiclab - they're just down the road from me. AU$320=US$170. i'm sure there would be a stockist in the states somewhere or perhaps musiclab just haven't bothered to delete the page believing that no one would ever look seriously at it [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img] ...

About the only Auratone product we can find up here is the in-ceiling speakers. I guess Auratone has given up on the U.S. [img]images/icons/rolleyes.gif[/img]
Musiclab's website sez, "Note: We are presently out of stock of
USC-RFG monitors"

I wonder if that's the same Musiclab? (See link @ Doncorlione's post above)

jbl make a small speaker like the aurotones but with better response to simulate modern day car stereo sytems called "control 1's"

Go here and search for catalog number 40-5024 for a rough modern equivalent. Works for some.
