Running PTHD 10.3.4 with OSX 10.8.3. So far no problems...

That's great. But my question remains...did you upgrade in place, or uninstall PT first?

I upgraded the OS using the combo update (always do it this way as it's safer IMO) - PT 10.3.3 works great with it!

Your replies are all very comforting, but I'm not getting an answer to my question. Here goes for the third time (maybe the charm?):

Are we UNINSTALLING PRO TOOLS before updating OS X then reinstalling, or merely running the combo update WITH PRO TOOLS IN PLACE?

You usually apply the OS update on top of your existing Pro Tools install, it makes no sense to de-install PT prior to updating the OS. Its a good idea to repair disk permissions prior to applying the update and if you have tools like DiskWarrior you could also check your drive/partition before applying the OS update.

However there are other options if you really want to play safe:
It makes sense to have a clean 10.8 install, make all your OS settings in System Preferences, Finder etc., then clone this install with tools like Carbon Copy Cloner to a disk image, save this image as a backup.
You then can copy this clone image back to your drive whenever you need a fresh OS install, then apply the (whatever is current) OS X combo update and then install PT from scratch. This way you always have a clean system... but thats not a necessity.

Hope this helps.

Re: Mac OS 10.8.3 compatibility?

Thanks, Oliver!

I only asked because I distinctly remember it being suggested here and elsewhere in the past that we should to a clean uninstall prior to an OS update, then reinstall after the update is complete (for those of us who choose not to "wipe the slate clean" every time).

That method hasn't failed me before, but I do know that was prior to PT 10...so I wasn't sure if the uninstall PT/update OS X/reinstall PT method was still suggested for PT 10 installs. I might just update on top, as you suggested. (And I always do a SuperDuper clone before updating/upgrading ANYTHING, so I will be safe if any gremlins appear post-update.)

Well, it seems like you got mixed up with 2 things, the OS update and the PT update. Whenever you attempt to install a new PT update it is recommended to uninstall the previous version of PT, a clean uninstall is best like you mentioned. A lot of users have had no problems updating PT on top of an existing PT version. I would not recommend this though.

However this has nothing to do with OS X updates.
In order to apply OS updates you can refer to what I have posted above.

cheers

it works extremely well... Takes care of A LOT of drop outs which were occurring because of sandboxd confinements.

Re: Mac OS 10.8.3 compatibility?

hi - took the leap to 10.3 on 10.8.3 last weekend without running the uninstall first.
It had a few issues finding the digi002 rack initially then worked fine. It also had issues with an old MoogerFooger Delay that was part of an old 7.x producers bundle but running the usual fix brought it back to normal. Now all good so far
