surround panning

hi im upgrading to a pro tools HD system and was wanting to know if there are any good surround panning controllers out there. i currently mix stereo on LE with a control 24.

is there any hardware which can be hooked up to the c24 similar to the surround panner in the d control.??

It's not hardware, but is VERY intuitive and it works.

Neyrinck Audio MIX51.

There are really very few hardware surround options out there for PT HD. If you are not too in love with your CI24. you mite want to looking into buying a Pro Control with the edit pack.

I know a couple of people using the JL Cooper box and they are very happy with it.

Re: surround panning

I bought the digidesign panner, mentioned below, because I thought it would speed up my surround mixing. Although it kind of works as advertised, the implementation of this panner in PT is so terribly bad and counter-intuitive, that I wonder who made up the concept. I mainly mix on a Control 24 and panning options are somewhat limited there, but after a few weeks of trying to force myself into using the Digi Panner I'm back at controlling the surround panning with the mouse...(and ususally I avoid mousing as much as possible).

What goes wrong: the panner doesn't follow channel selection or fader touch or insert selection or whatever. You have to activate it on a channel, say channel 1 and if you need to pan something on channel 48, you can push 47 times on "next track" and do your panning, very handy indeed, NOT. The other alternative is activate it with the mouse on screen, but by that time I've already done the panning on screen as well...

Digi please make a better implementation, so that this becomes user-friendly and one can actually use it to mix.
I would like options such as:
- panner follows fader touch
- panner follows channel selection
- panner follows EQ or insert selection

This way you can easily work through the SFX and AMB channels in a 5.1 post mix.

Thanks for listening.

Greetings,

Thierry

It's kinda cheesy but I use a wacom pen tablet. It's easy and cost like 50 bucks.

Oh yes, the pan window should DEFINITELY follow channel selection!!

I use a USB trackpad. Simple. Works.

wowww interesting. How do you do that? I mean, how do you tell protools to interpret trackpad position as panning... wait a minute, is the trakpad simply replacing the mouse?
