This is KILLING me!

I have 3 issues/bugs occurring right now. There are no error codes displayed.

1. I push play and playback doesn't start, I have to "prime the deck" (win+space) first. This fun little bug gets old fast.
2. I'm using Elastic Audio on multitrack drums, on playback I hear glitches and phasing occasionally, when I play the problem section again it's not there, it seems to happen more when the playhead is not visible, off the screen.
3. After running the Tech Support Utility, the click plugin has stopped working completely. Before this the click would take a few beats before it would suddenly start.
4. I'm only getting about 160 dverbs, seems low for a quad.

Troubleshooting steps so far:
- Closing all other windows and programs (no change)
- Installing separate firewire card, taken from my old computer. (fixed #1 for a night, then recurred)
- Tech support utility, trashing prefs and databases (no change)
- Manually trashing prefs (fixed #1 for now)
- Defrag all drives
- Tried various combinations in the playback engine window.
Current playback engine setting is: 512 buffer, 4 processors, 80%, ignore errors (I will take this off now) , default, normal

In this session RTAS usage is maybe 5%, Elastic usage is 1% according to the system usage window.

I do have Avast! antivirus and Spybot running at all times.

My interface is a 002R Version G

Thanks for your help and suggestions!

p.s. I'm a M-Audio/Digidesign Dealer, if that has any influence. I'd like to be able to reccommend stable systems to customers.

Re: This is KILLING me!

Without really going through your report, the first thing that jumps out at me is you say your defraged all your drives. Sometimes this can scatter your files across all of them making it harder for PT to playback in real time.
Have you tried "making a copy in" and checking the "with files" box to a different location? This has helped me a couple of times. Good luck,:-)

Re: This is KILLING me!

this is on a new session

after posting this, issue 1 is not being a pain in my ass at the moment
and the click has started working again.

So I sort of know how to correct it, but have no clue how to prevent it.

For #2, the word is to consolidate any files in a track to eliminate glitches when using EA. Just a thought.

I'll consolidate when I'm done editing, one of the main reasons I use EA is because it is non-destructive.

consolidating will render those glitches to a new file.

You could be right. If you're interested, there was a recent thread on EA where this subject came up and Digi responded. I was under the impression that the possible glitches were in playback. Not sure what the work around would be.

Re: This is KILLING me!

I saw that, I took it to mean, if you comp your tracks and have fades, consolidate before doing additional work with EA.
In this particular session what I'm working on is consolidated files sent from Logic.

I'm hearing glitches, but the glitches don't appear to happen in the same spot twice.

It's no problem to correct glitches with EA, I just need to know if there is actually a glitch or not.

You need to read page 595 of the Pro Tools Reference Guide, which talks about microfades. That's what you're experiencing - it's the transition between the microfade and a rendered fade that causes the glitch. The problem, and solution, were covered in that previous thread.

audiogeekzine 12-17-2008 09:06 AM

Re: This is KILLING me!

The glitches are in the middle of regions, nothing to do with fades. I'll have a look anyway.

Any ideas about the other problems?

PS. wow that's a lot of drift with x-form. I consolidated the files AFTER editing and everything was way off. It takes an hour to render x-form, so I'll just record each track to a new one.

Re: This is KILLING me!

I recently had to remove my Nvidia 9600GTOC video card because it was introducing random intervals of latency that resulted in pops & glitches. I used the DPC latency checker program to verify the long latencies. I had consistent latency of 30 or 40 microseconds with occasional periods of up to 2 seconds latency.

In the end I found that the only way to get rid of them was to go back to a 6600 based video card.

Digi Tech Support verified that there were issues with some new Nvidia cards but didn't comment about the specifics.

See http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=227313 for more info.
