Mojave ?

Hello y'all,

YES, I KNOW - It's not officially supported.
However, I have other reasons to upgrade to mojave on my laptop (which is not my main machine) and would like to know if anyone's successfully running PT 12.5.2 vanilla on it

Cheers !

Will your laptop support Mojave? Mojave has certain hardware requirements like a video card that runs Metal.

And if it indeed does, I would do a dual-boot setup:o

Amen to that brother. Dual boots have allowed me to try things that may not be quite ready for prime time.

Try to search YouTube. There are few videos about it. Pro Tools in Mojave works perfectly.
Unfortunately you canít install directly in 10.14 cos Pro Tools installer has script that checking OS version. If you are ďadvancedĒ user you can solve this.
But if you make update from High Sierra most of things you can see in Pro Tools workflow will stay unchanged.

Mojave and PT 2018.7

I know it’s not supported but....

Will PT 2018.7 run on Mojave? Has anyone had it running

My new MBP was drenched in coffee last Friday  ...... after giving it a good dry out the Touch Bar was no longer working. I got on the phone to Apple and booked it in, I manage to get it to Apple today. Touch Bar gone, logic board gone and because it would a custom build model AUS$2500.00+ in parts minus labour and freaking expensive coffee. Lucky I have Apple Care so the cost will be $429.00. The tech asked me if I had back it up I said no but as I store all my sessions files on an external I only have PT, Cubase and a bunch of plugins I can reinstall my only request is that I keep HIgh Sierra 10.13.6..... and he said prolly won’t be able to do that..... which leads me to believe I’ll get Mojave..... I’m thinking with that amount of damage I wouldn’t be surprised if they just gave me a new one. The turn around time for the repair is almost exactly the time it took to order it it from China in the first place.

Mojave and PT 2018.7

I see it’s not supported, but is anyone actually running it?

Unfortunately it Looks like I might be giving it a try shortly.

Re: Installing Pro Tools 10 on Mojave

Downgrade it to High Sierra.

If they give you a new machine, you can put 10.13.6 on there.

You donít say which model your MBP is, but if itís the 2017 model, that will run Sierra.

As everyone pointed out, Mojave is not yet approved by Avid. However I'm running PT 18.7 (Ultimate) on my MBPro with Mojave 10.14 and it seems fine, at least for my minimal needs.

This sounds promising.....

Sorry mate. I use Tapatalk to browse forums... well, the ones that support it. I donít see signatures.

If it comes back with Mojave, downgrade to High Sierra or brave the elements and try running Pro Tools on it.

Either way, you have options.

Re: Installing Pro Tools 10 on Mojave

OK, so the current model, so High Sierra is a go. If it comes back with Mojave, format it and install a copy of High Sierra.

Pretty sure 10.13.6 was what those shipped with which is also an unsupported OS for PT... currently. So wether you should downgrade or not is entirely up to you.

Was it working fine with 10.13.6 before you spilt coffee on it? Do you have a clone of your drive you can clone back? If not, lesson learnt there.

PS: hope their peanut M&Ms.

Yup possibly I know another user from Melbourne TDM posted a link to previous mOS ver but Iím not sure the newer MBP can run it.

Yup it certainly was, Well Iím in two minds having done a lil more research since last evenings news about my MBP. I notice Cubase 9.5 has passed compatibility with High Sierra 10.13.6 and by the looks they are experiencing one bug with Mojave is around access to your contacts only with their latest update 9.5.30 I still have the pre update ver. But they seem to be getting on top of it. I understand the PT isnít supporting Mojave but....but! Doesnít necessarily mean it wonít run. I havenít seen any posts with anyone having tried though.

Personally ultimately Iíll go with whatever is going to work. But I have spent quite sometime now over the last few months getting my head around PT and there are some features there that I know I would missed if I changed to Cubase. plus the time again getting my head around Cubase well at lest the manual isnít as big haha. Iíll probably end up running both in any case.

Yup and with the 2018.7 even better, might get a buffer error once in a while but nothing like 2018.4. Was throwing up. I hadnít updated to the latest PT update. Yup a clone would have beneficial only to have saved the mOS ver, I hadnít (and you could say itís no excuse) but I wasnít at the final setup re: testing MBP High Sierra 10.13.6 - DAW(s) - and recently purchased TF5. And in saying that there were issues with the TF5 and PT that I was beginning to think was terminal and which caused me to try Cubase, btw runs smooth as. Just prior to the coffee spill I did managed to get PT up and running which I wonít bother explain here.... what Iím try to say the sys was being tested across the interaction of three things to see what works best, once that is settled yup a drive clone is definitely status quo. So Iím basically still building my system so 99% of the session files are examples built on going through the ref manual. So no major lost just a bit pissed at having to possibly move to Mojave if there are issues there.

And having a look at Mojave..... looks like theyíre adding lots of Windoze style candy which in my experience doesnít necessarily bode well with compatibility with some software(s) that tend to use a lot of resources.

Re: Installing Pro Tools 10 on Mojave

Btw, I did ask the Apple tech if I could have High Sierra 10.13.6 but it didn’t look likely..... that’s why I suspect possibly it is going to be replaced completely or the ssd drive along with the logic board which I imagine comes preloaded with whatever is the latest mOS.

Well thatís sounding positive. The Apple tech today confirmed they are pushing for a full replacement MBP because it was custom ordered apparently they need to build a new one over getting replacement parts and apparently they can only do that at the factory in China.... so looking like a very expensive AUS$5500.00 cup of coffee which I have to pay $429.00 the rest being subsidised by Apple Careís insurance company.

Re: Mojave and PT 2018.7

The only thing they mention for both Mojave and HS .4+ is the low buffer issue. I upgraded to HS not knowing this and 2018.7 is running fine. I don't use low buffers very often.

I've heard good reports on Mojave and I'm tempted to go for it.

xrekcor 10-18-2018 03:26 PM

Re: Mojave and PT 2018.7

Most users seem to have noticed a huge decrease in the buffer issues with 2018.7.

You can go back to whatever you had before. May have to completely wipe the system drive but you can go back.

You DID make a backup/clone of your system right? Outside of ZDT on an iLok it's the cheapest insurance for when things happen. Right now I'm doing my weekly clones of the systems here.

Well unluckily my brother updated it so no backups were done. Is it normal to have my audio tracks have clicks in them? Before the update my stuff was working fine and then after, clicks will randomly be in the audio trackss that I recorded.

Travisenglandd 10-21-2018 07:19 PM

Re: MOJAVE & Pro tools

As in normal, I mean that is it most likely because Iím running Mojave that theses clicks are happening.

Darryl Ramm 10-21-2018 08:25 PM

Re: MOJAVE & Pro tools

Nobody here can guess what is going on with your system, or wether that has anything to do with official support from Avid.

Clicks are usually a sign of a clocking problem or IO buffer too small. You need to start there and troubleshoot, check your system is optimized or roll back to the last working backup you have... or go do full reinstalls. You *never* made a backup of your working system? Ever? That is not somebody else’s fault. You are not doing well so far, so guessing your problem is caused by Pro Tools version not being officially supported.... bzzzt wrong approach there as well, you should at least be doing basic standard troubleshooting of that... (“help us help you” up top of every DUC web page).

All these are your problems, and all can be worked by you.

Latest Pro Tools is running OK on the latest Mojave for me, not much load and largely using Built-In Output while editing (another test you can try).

I'm looking at picking up a new MacBook Pro in the next few weeks and would rather get on with Mojave than have to start rolling back operating systems if possible...will be using primarily with UAD hardware and software.

Any more experiences rolling in? Obviously I know it's not officially supported yet by Avid...

got my brand new replacement MBP today, I had custom upgrades on it and requested that I have High Sierra 10.13.6 the apple chap told me last week it would be impossible because Mojave was out. What a nice surprise when I fired up my lappy it had HS 10.13.6 loaded.... thanks apple..

I'll be updating to Mojave in due time, haven't heard any bad reports yet from people who are running it and so far sounds promising.

Mojave and PT Installers

Yes I know it's not compatible, I have an experimental partition, was going to give I ta shot anyway. But every time I mount either the 2018.7 or 2018.10 installer, just opening it, freezes up my finder, before I even try to install.

This seems very odd, just curious if anyone else has tried to install in Mojave and if you're seeing anything similar...

OK thanks. So very strange then, I wonder what could be happening. Tried numerous times now, opening the installer ALWAYS freezes up Finder and I have to relaunch. Can never even get to installing... Bummer!

OK never mind. Decided to wait it out, somehow the disk image was taking forever to release control back to the Mac. Waiting several minutes, and it came up.

Avid cripples the installers to do that on purpose - you can actually run 12.5 on Mojave no problem

I just upgraded and everything runs just fine for me. I have a Mac Pro w 64gb ram and 1tb ssd so performance has never been an issue for me. What I did discover were a few small things with Pro Tools Dock and Eucon control. After the upgrade you need to give it rights to interact in the security accessibility settings. It crashes otherwise but that is not really an app crash. Also you need to go to networking and re-enable DHCP for the PT Dock and any controllers like Avid Artist. Not sure why it reset that but easy fix. Lastly you have to go back to the peripherals and recheck the box to Enable Eucontrol. Easy breezy. I run UA apollo units and all work just fine without issues. Hope that helps. Peter

Running Mojave and PT2018.10.0 on a brand new six core macbook pro and had no problem installing, updating, or anything. Also, waaaaay fewer crashes than PT2018 and High Sierra. Although I have seen some repeatable crashes relating to using monophonic elastic audio in offline mode. Other than that, haven't found any issues.

From this description I'm guessing you did an in-situ 'upgrade' of OSX right? Not the way to go even though it's the 'Apple Way'.

I disagree. Yeah a clean install is great but not always necessary. My High Sierra was a clean install so to take the upgrade path was no big deal for me. I was ready to flatten the system if necessary but I dont want to reinstall everything again. Also its not really the apple way, its the convenient way. As anything, YMMV.
