2020.3 Mac 5,1
I have an old MacPro5,1 (upgraded from 4,1) running OS X 10.12.6 and PT 19.6.
Has anybody tried 2020.3 on the 5,1 or OSX 10.12? What OS version would you recommend for this machine and PT2020? |
Re: 2020.3 Mac 5,1
Supported versions are High Sierra and later

I'm on a 5.1 Mac Pro upgraded from 4.1, High Sierra 10.13.6, and 2020.3 is running great so far.

Thank you, JFreak and chetland.
I guess my options are Hi Sierra or Mojave (with a compatible GPU). Before installing 10.12.6 I went through a few more or less stable OS versions. 10.12.6 has been running rather smoothly, so I’ve been hesitating about upgrading. What would you recommend when it comes to stability and compatibility? 10.13.6 or 10.14? |

From what I have understood Mojave is better choice if you have or plan to have SSD's

Re: 2020.3 Mac 5,1
10.13.6 All day Long! Mojave has been soo hit n miss it’s crazy! If you cant or wont goto Catalina then use HS as long as possible. Why would Mojave be ”better” for SSD’s!? We use ONLY SSD’s in the studio and no issues what so ever.
Forget Mojave and go for HS and when you NEED to go up then ”that day that sorrow” ;) We have our old 3 trashcans reverted back to 10.13.6 as both Mojave and Catalina was soso and we have our 2 new Mac Pro coming with Catalina so probably gotta start using when they arrive. 28 Core 384GB and filled with SSD’s so i gather they will be quite the monsters compared to our 12 core Trashcans. |
Re: 2020.3 Mac 5,1
Trashcans can handle NVMe SSD's natively but for Cheesegraters they say Mojave is much better and while High Sierra can do it booting with black screen may be too much of a hassle

Re: 2020.3 Mac 5,1
Thanks a lot!
I’m gonna start with 10.13.6 then, and see how that works out. If I’m lucky maybe I can stay there for a while before buying a new machine. Southsidemusic - 28 Core 384GB  I have 96GB installed and use PT and VE Pro on the same machine. Works really well, though! But I was thinking about building a slave for the sample libraries and VI:s hosted in VE Pro (Mac or PC). |
