pro tools duet questions

Just installed pro tools duet and pro tools 11 on my computer. Windows 7 64 bit.

1. Should the pro tools duet control only open as a stand alone program? On my system I can open the duet control and run it along with pro tools 11 but it does not open as part of pro tools. This works fine but I am making sure it is normal.
2. My midi port on the duet is not working. I did some trouble shooting. The midi controller works when plugged into the computer usb port. It triggers instruments in protools etc. But when I plug it into the port on the duet it does not register.
I forget the name of the midi controller but it does work with pro tools normally.
