Help with drum replacement Trigger 2

Hi guys

I’ve been given a track to mix and the drums are not the best. I’ve decided to use trigger 2 which works a treat and they sound kick arse. The problem I’m having is the 2 tom tracks have been poorly recorded and trigger is not triggering on all the hits when the drummer does a drum roll. Even tab to transient isn’t seeing all the hits. I’ve messed with the settings in trigger and got very close to it working but not perfect. The drum roll is played very quick and lightly. Anybody here help me with a way of finding where all the transients/hits are.

Thank you in advance

I deal with this all the time. You just have to get in there and carve the hits out yourself using Separate Region (CTRL-E). Like you said, you can't trust Tab to Transient with this, so just use your eyes and ears. Then use clip gain to make sure the really light hits are showing up in Trigger (get creative with it!) If I know I'm going to be replacing 100%, I really get in there and chop sh*t up so the resulting regions are just slivers of transient material for Trigger to pick up.

You may find better results by making an entirely separate track for just the snare/tom rolls and adjusting the "Detail" and "Sensitivity" dials (and most likely the "Retrigger" threshold as well) in Trigger. This is the better approach if you'll be mixing the original signal in with the sample. If you are adverse to making a separate track with a separate instance of Trigger 2, you can always automate the aforementioned dials.

Let us know how it goes!

Thanks Alex :)

I’ve done the chopping up before, wasn’t sure if there was a quicker/easier way. The problem with this one I’m dealing with is the wave form is very constant blob and the drum roll is all stick bouncing to get it fast and not done to a click so can’t even use the grid to help!!

Aarrrgghhh lol

Hi,

I find i have to automate the detail control to match the level of each hit.

Thanks Chris

That’s the thing, it’s not even picking up each hit weather the detail is low or high. Messing with the sensitivity and retrigger won’t detect every hit

Hi,

Yeah it needs something to anchor to. might need to manually place something to act as a trigger. i bit of a pain but doable with some work.

just take a copy of a kick sample and copy it wherever you need that tom... the replacer plugin does the magic

Other options
1-check overhead tracks to see if they show clearer transients
2-manually paste
3-Clip Gain the track louder and then try to strip out in between the hits
4-see if there's a demo for Toontrack Superior Drummer 3(it might do a better job of analysis and replacement).
5-got Melodyne? Create a midi track, clear out the false notes and trigger a drum VI plugin

Thank you so much for all of your suggestions guys. The melodyne one sounds like it could work. I’m going to give that a go in the morning
