Recording a female vocalist...

Ok, I'm new to this R&B thing and let me tell ya, this stuff is a lot more difficult than I thought.

Anyway ..

I'm doin this track where the vocalist starts her tracks out with a low controlled tone, then all of a sudden she belts out these notes. The level of her main vocal track is very inconsistent. Should I have compressed her during the recording? What do I do now?

Well, if your signal didn't clip (distort) on the way in, you'll probably be able to even it out using some compression and volume/trim control.

If it's clipped, then you're screwed, unless you're going for a Trent Reznor meets Aretha Franklin kinda thing.

nah, no clippage...

So I'ma have to compress and automate. I figured that was the case, I just wanted to make sure.

thanks Slim
