Pro Tools AAX Plug-In Latency Chart

I don't know if anyone has done this before me, but I tried to find a master chart on both the DUC, and on the internet - and I couldn't find one.

I have therefore created a Google Spreadsheet entitled - "Pro Tools AAX Plug-In Latency Chart"

I thought that it might be useful to have a central place where this information can be entered, edited, and viewed.
The headers are only editable by me, but the entire chart can have information entered by anyone who accesses the chart.

Obviously, information can be deleted too - so I will try to make frequent backups.
Of course you can also download the spreadsheet in just about any format yourself (Excel, PDF, etc).
So please use responsibly ! ;)

Feel free to give me any feedback if you guys think the layout can be improved.
If this already exists somewhere else, please let me know and I'll delete mine.

Re: Pro Tools AAX Plug-In Latency Chart

Hi John, nobody needs to submit anything to me for entering the data. They can just fill it in directly on the spreadsheet themselves. It will immediately be seen by everyone who views the chart. The beauty about this is that between all of us, we might cover all the plug-ins that are out there. It will obviously take months (even years) to become a truly useful database - but hey, it has to start somewhere right?

This was just my first idea of a starting point. If it becomes popular, then I agree - the sticky idea would be very nice if the DUC admins approve.

I could even turn over the entire project to them if they wanted.

I'll stick it for now and see if Jeffro is ok with it.

I suppose it'll depend on participation whether it "sticks" :D

I do think the community would need to embrace this and add to it for it to be a worthwhile resource.

so.... get to it everybody! :-)

Wow, Google Spreadsheets is even cooler than I imagined.

I just went to look at the page, and I can see users filling in data live while I'm actually looking at the page.

Awesome. Thanks guys for the contributions so far !

P.S. Yeah, that must have been you John ! Thanks. Yes, I will do a little organizing periodically if things get in disarray. The entry of data is what's important right now.

yeah, i had a little time this afternoon .. !!

btw: i have found a lot of plugins that either have "0" or do not report it .. do you think we should put those in as well ??

Re: Pro Tools AAX Plug-In Latency Chart

Yeah, I think so. That might be useful to the Avid programming crew - even if it's 3rd party. They can probably contact the relevant people once there's enough data reported. Drew can probably answer that one better.

Re: Pro Tools AAX Plug-In Latency Chart

How is the latency being measured?

Re: Pro Tools AAX Plug-In Latency Chart

So just confirming are all these the numbers reported by Pro Tools delay compensation or manually verified/tested?

1. Delay Compensation must be enabled in your Playback Engine.
2. View the Delay Compensation section in View menu > Mix Window Views > Delay Compensation (checked)
3. Insert a plug-in.
4. The 1st item (nearest the fader) in the Delay Compensation box is the value reported.

Well I would have thought that the number reported by Pro Tools would be correct.
I am assuming that you know about some cases where this is not true.
Would you like me to add another column for that manual check Darryl?

No, I just wanted to understand what is being reported. It would be good to add a note in the spreadsheet that the data is the reported latency...

Sure there are cases where plugins get delay comp wrong, I can't think of the exact cases now.

This will be helpful for folks. Thanks.

Re: Pro Tools AAX Plug-In Latency Chart

Just a quick tip for anyone contributing to the spreadsheet . . .

If you've run out of space to add another plug-in in a certain manufacturer's section - just select the row at the far left (click on the number) and from the "Insert" menu choose either "row above" or "row below" . . . whatever makes sense to you.

You can undo/redo mistakes with the two little curved arrows under the "Edit" menu.

Thanks for the quick response. What is the ETA on 3.8? Is that compatible with WSControll app 3.6.1 and above?

Waves has a webpage showing their plugin latency.

Re: Pro Tools AAX Plug-In Latency Chart

Just added some entries, mostly for McDSP & SoundToys, but also Valhalla, Massey, plus Waves SSL Bus Comp. (all 48kHz/Native)

Many of the ones I posted were "0", which i figure is useful information. (I mention it because previously there were almost no zeroes in the spreadsheet.)

Re: Pro Tools AAX Plug-In Latency Chart

what a brilliant idea, especially for the DSP users.. Yes the info is a little light now but as it gets filled up it will be a truly invaluable resource.. Many kudos to the OP for putting this idea to fruition.

Also nice to see how low the DSP latency is on most of the Avid stuff, which would make them ideal for tracking.

Can't wait to see the MCDSP figures :)

Cheers, thanks again

This is sweet! I posted a bunch of mine. I have a ton more I can add to the chart and if I get a moment, I'll do it.

Thanks for doing this.

Re: Pro Tools AAX Plug-In Latency Chart

can we please add this to the pro tools 2018 forum now, so we don't have to go to legacy every time we want to find it? I almost feel it's not worth even updating and doing tests to get figures as many will miss reading it.

Hi, guys. Is there any way you can point me in direction towards understanding the data that you´re entering? That way i can also be contributing to the sheet. It´s a great initiativ and i´m using both AVIDs own plug-ins and third party. Thx in advance. / Jonas
