Buying Used Pro Tools
 

I am currently wanting to buy pro tools 11 off this guy in my community. He is selling the ilok along with the license for pro tools. Do I need to pay a $25 dollar fee in order to get his license over to me or have his ilok put under my ilok account?

If he's transferring the license to your account, then the $25 transfer fee applies. Either he pays the fee himself, or he charges you for it and pays the fee himself.

If he's just selling an iLok with a license on it, then it will never be in your account and if the iLok dongle ever fails then you're out of luck. I would suggest avoiding that situation - always get the license transferred to your account.

Not only that, but you'll not be able to upgrade the license unless it's in your account or he gives you access to his account.

When you buy an upgrade, the upgrade license will be deposited in an iLok account that you nominate. It has to be the same iLok account that has the old license that you want to surrender for the upgrade AND you have to be signed in to that iLok account for the license exchange to take place.

If you just buy the iLok dongle with the license on it, that's what you are stuck with forever, and as mesaone says, if anything happens to the iLok you are sunk.

Personally, unless you are buying it for only a few $ and don't imagine ever wanting to upgrade, it's pointless to buy a license that won't be transferred to you.
