Track View grouping

Hey guys, I am hoping someone can explain how the grouping in Track view is determined. It seems to be by color for adjacent tracks. Is this the only way they can be grouped? Does anyone know of another way to group tracks independent of color? Thanks for the help!

I think the only 2 options are linear or grouped by color...
