Mac Pro 2013 10 or 12 Core?

1 Attachment(s)
Hello

About to upgrade a 4 Core Mac Pro 2013 (D300) to a faster processor and more RAM. Looking for best option. I wish to maximize performance for Plugins and Virtual instruments in Pro Tools Ultimate version 2020-09 on MAC OS Mojave. System will be upgraded to 64 GB RAM.

This is the info I have so far (not sure if it is accurate):
Attachment 13598

Looking at this information, the 8-core appears to be the best option all around, but I have read the 10 and 12 core are better for audio. I realize these numbers alone don't tell the whole story. I am curious as to what is the real world experience out there.

Any other processors that work, and have better performance?

Anything to watch for in selecting a processor upgrade?

Thoughts?

Thanks. . .

I see there is a kits on eBay for the E5-2687 v2, which is an 8 Core 3.4 GHz. I hear these processors throttle back when they get too hot, and if true then the question becomes more complicated.

I was hoping to move on this soon. . . so would really like to hear from people that have comparisons with 8/10/12 core processors in the 2013 Mac Pros heavily loaded with native Plugins and Virtual instruments (in addition to the HDX Cards in expansion Chassis). . . I am hearing the 10-Core is best for Pro Tools and Logic, but so little info out there. . .the overhead of extra cores does really have a negative impact, and with the reduced clock speed as the cores go up does as well, so it is not apparent that more cores is better. . . hoping for some real world experiences. Thanks!

Here is some info on the upgrade options “how to”.

Jfreak (mod on this forum) has built the 10 core and is very happy with it. He will probably chime in eventually. I am running the 6 core and so far I haven’t pushed it to its limits. But everyone’s needs are different. Where did you source that chart from? The numbers for 8 core seem disproportionate to the other processors.

My understanding is that beyond six, additional cores buy you faster bounce/rendering speeds but not better real time performance which is what you need for virtual instruments.

Beyond 6 gets you more AAX Native plugin instances too. Won't comment on VIs as that's not my area of expertise (If I have any area of expertise).

I’ll find a better way to show the above, but no time now. If that table is true, it seems the 8 core should be best, if it truly has the highest single core performance... while still having decent multithreaded performance.

I relied on similar info when I bought my factory spec 8 core. Hard to tell whether that info was borne out in practice as it's the only trashcan I have so have no direct comparison. I think if running as many (non-VI) AAX Native plugins as possible then the 12 core is the machine for you - I premixed a show recently where the template had been setup on a 12 core and it wouldn't reliably run on my 8 core.

I am using a 10 core in my trash can. It’s a great machine, but I feel like the question is over baking the cake a little bit. Particularly between the 10 and 12 core CPU, there is less than 2% difference in benchmarks. If delivering a project boils down to that 2%, you probably have some bigger questions to ask than what CPU is appropriate.

I would skip the 8 core entirely and just grab whatever 10 or 12 core you can find that works for the budget & availability.
