Clarification on subscriptions and renewals

I’ve been using protools a long time. I’ve not upgraded since 12.5.2 and was thinking I might do it for some new useful features etc however I’m a bit stuck on the new pricing plan they have. From what I’ve been researching the renewals each year are crazy money and if your subscription runs out, you can’t use protools.

I understand you pay for a year of updates, fixes etc but with the money you’ve spent on that full year, surely you would be capped at whatever version you stopped subscribing to. And not basically Just shut down and unable to use the software.

Can anyone clarify if I’m understanding this right. If I have a perpetual licence and I take a yearly upgrade, renewal plan. IF I choose not to renew the following year for reasons, I’m happy with that current version. I would then lose my whole daw unless I re-subscribe at £100-£200 for another year?

If you reinstate support plan on your perpetual license, you will get updates for that time and your perpetual license will continue working after if you choose to let your support plan expire.

If you choose to subscribe instead, you also will get all updates released while your subscription is active but once you end your subscription you will not be able to use PT later.

Support Plan is not Subscription.

I want to clarify something also. I have a perpetual license that has a current subscription due in December. So the renewal is now $199. If I don’t renew this year but want to up my renewal in 2020 or 2021, will it be the $299 as before?

No, don't get confused with the two.

Subscription is when you don't have a permanent license but want to subscribe for some period of time. As in "renting" the software.

Perpetual License is perpetual as in you own the license and it does not stop working as long as you own it. Whatever software version released when your Support Plan has been active is available for you to use "in perpetuity". If you want to get access to new versions you need to have active Support Plan.

Nobody knows what the future price list will be, but the current ones has been revised this summer.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I’ve never had a subscription and as I stated I’m on 12.5.2.

So if I choose to subscribe based on no subscription before then it’s basically I don’t re-subscribe I don’t get to use it?

Okay I have a current support plan. Is the current price to reinstate the perpetual license currently $299?

Your choice whether you want to reinstate the support plan for your perpetual license or crossgrade it to subscription. Whichever makes more sense in your opinion.

Re: Clarification on subscriptions and renewals

Just saw the new reply’s.

And feel I have it now.

I have a perpetual protools 12 licence with no subscription.

So If I take an annual subscription out I get free updates and support for the year and if I don’t renew I will still be able to continue using my protools software up to the latest update I stopped paying at. As I have a perpetual licence?

It’s so confusing.

Why don't you go to shop.avid.com to check it out?
