Pro Tools 8 LE stalls at video engine launch

2.3 duo
OS 10.5.7 (installed 10.5 from disk with complete erase/install, updated with combo pack from Digidesign site for 10.5.7)
10 GB RAM
My HD is APM

Installed Pro Tools 8 LE
Program stalls at "launching video engine"
I tried restarting the computer and relaunching Pro Tools, I've gotten as far as a "Bus Error" in the tread "Main Thread" at address oxbffcd40 and a DAE 728 error but the program always stalls at the video engine launch.

I tried removing DAE preference folder and the DigiSetupOSX preference
Updated to 8.03c from Digidesign site
I still cannot run Pro Tools.
Probably a dumb question but I don't need my external drive connected to run Pro Tools, do I? And yes, the 003 rack is up and running before I turn the G5 to run Pro Tools.
