vocal tracking

I was just wondering how you all go about recording vocal tracks with the digi?
I was thinking about picking up one real good channel of pre-amp maybe with comp and eq and then go into the back of the digi. Then I could use plug-ins for effects after recording. But my singer wants to hear the effects up-front while recording. so I guess I could record 2 tracks one effected and one not. what other approaches are you all taking?

Re: vocal tracking

use your rtrm plug ins (real time rack mount!) for tracking w/effects for headphone monitors. otherwise, even if you use an aux return with rtas plugins, there is no way to avaoid the delay. rack mount is the way to go. you will need a simple mixer for this.

Re: vocal tracking

I simply split my preamp output and go into my mixer and to the 001. I mute the 001 vocal track so it doesn't get heard (except when punching in/out) and then I monitor from the mixer. Simple, and no latency.

There's no reason you couldn't (I often do) add a compressor to the signal chain prior to the 001. You could also add an EQ.
