Recording software instruments using plugin's keyboard

Hey all, it's been forever since I've tried to record any midi without a controller, but I find myself this morning trying to get an arpeggio from Vacuum recorded into a track just by using the plugin's on-screen keyboard but it's not recording any midi into into the track. Do I need to enable something that i'm missing here?

I've got the software instrument track record enabled, vacuum is loaded and I can hear the audio coming through when I record, but no midi info is showing up in the region.

Probably something really simple - appreciate the help!

Not many VIs output MIDI. If the VI doesn't show up as an input for a MIDI or instrument track, then there's nothing to record. Also, even when dealing with hardware synths, the arpeggiator rarely outputs MIDI.

Indeed^^^ and to make music with plugin VI's, you really need some kind of midi controller. Assuming you have an available midi input, it can be any old(read CHEAP:rolleyes:) synth with a midi output. I use an old Ensoniq Mirage that cost me all of $50:eek::p

Wow, a Mirage! I used to have one. The guy I traded it to still has it and it's in VG condition. Nothing like an instrument with attitude - 8 bit. Ah, the 80s . . .

Ahhh, ok - the last time I had to do something similar, I was using Logic which has a "keyboard keyboard", so you can type in notes from the QWERTY keyboard... I'll wait till I get home and hook up my controller. Thanks, All!
