Intel i7-9700k
Hello there,
Just wondered if anybody is running an intel 9700k here and how well it handles pro tools? I'm planning on doing a new PC build soon moving from a i7-3820. Also i'm curious what a motherboard to pair it with might be? Cheers, |

Mainboard wise you should chose in regards to what you need. They mainly differ in number of ports and support for stuff like TB and 10Gbe. I'd say, don't cheap out on the mainboard. Get the one with the most features your budget allows for, so you won't regret it down the road. Swapping the mainboard is a pain, and that CPU should easily last you five years or more. And you don't want to regret having been stingy on the MB and now missing features in three years time. I always tend towards the offerings of Asus and Gigabyte. But that's just my personal preference coming from years of Hackintoshing. |
Re: Intel i7-9700k
Between Asus and Gigabyte, the Gigabyte brand has an edge in compatibility, so I would stick with that brand:o

Re: Intel i7-9700k
To REALLY future-proof it, I highly recommend a Gigabyte board with integrated Thunderbolt.

Re: Intel i7-9700k
Hello there - thanks for the replies.
So I've been doing some reading and folks seem to be recommending the 9900k over the 9700k for Pro Tools. Here's what I'm thinking so far; Intel Core i9 9900K 3.6GHz Octa Core CPU Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x 16GB) 3000MHz DDR4 Gigabyte Z390 UD Intel Socket 1151 Motherboard Cooler Master MasterLiquid Lite 120 Liquid CPU Cooler Cooler Master MasterLiquid Lite 120 Liquid CPU Cooler Seagate BarraCuda 2TB SATA III 3.5" Hard Drive Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 Windforce 8GB GPU Fractal Design Define R6 Black Gaming Case - Black EVGA 650 GQ 650W Modular 80+ Gold PSU 3 Year Collect & Return warranty Samsung 860 EVO 1TB 2.5" SATA III SSD No Thanks - I do not need WiFi 2x Arctic F12 PWM 120mm Case Fan with PWM Control Why does everybody recommend getting a motherboard that supports thunderbolt? I'm a windows user so surely that shouldn't be an issue? Another question - Is it worth reinstating my Pro Tools perpetual license? I've not updated since 12.4 because it has been fairly stable but now that I'm doing a new build it seems like a good opportunity to test out a newer version. I'm just concerned about stability. |

Re: Intel i7-9700k
Hi Meads - Thanks for that.
I have decided to go for it after getting some advice elsewhere as the 9900k sounds like a great choice for Pro Tools. Should be up and running next week. |

Thunderbolt isn’t a mac-only protocol.......some of us Windows guys like Apollo TB interfaces! Thunderbolt is the direction these things are headed because of vastly improved transfer rates. |
Re: Intel i7-9700k
After reading further I've decided to go with the Z390 AORUS PRO motherboard instead of the UD variant. I didn't want to skimp out on the mobo, especially if I decide to look at overclocking the CPU in the future.
Will post my results when it's ready. |
