Moving from 12.8.3 to 2019.12

I've been holding on to Window 7 for as long as I could (which is why I'm still on PT 12.8.3).

Next week I plan to take the plunge and move to Win 10 Pro. After that I'll install PT 2019.12.

Should I anticipate any compatibility issues with sessions created in 12.8.3?

Other than possibly missing plugins there shouldn't be issues. Make absolutely sure you have a backup of your working system BEFORE going to Windoze 10. And disconnect that backup drive so it doesn't possibly get corrupted during the W10 install.

I have installation files for all 3rd-party plugins, all very orderly in folders with license keys if applicable.

Regarding Avid-provided plugins, are there plugins that were provided in PT 12 that are not provided in the 2019 versions?

I run Acronis 3X per week on different internal and external drives, so I'm covered there.

Wouldn't have though of that--thanks. I've actually read that you should disconnect all other drives when installing W10.

I suggest NOT installing those, but rather be sure to install the latest/greatest versions of all plugs. Typically, just go to each company's site and DL the latest versions. The latest AVID plugs are also available to DL. A few months ago I updated Win 7 to 10, got the current PTools, and all current plug versions ---> works!!!

It should be a no-brainer to download fresh plugin installers

Thanks for the plugin suggestions.

I've got a lot of downloading to do...:o

I made the move from 7 to 10 and had a smooth transition so far and didn't lose anything. Im still using 12.5 right now thinking of going to 2019 but don't know about my older 12.5 sessions playing in 2019.

Hmmm..I wonder whether I should go from 7 to 10 with 12.8.3 then move to 2019.12 later.

Downside to that is I'd have to reinstall all the plugins all over again.

Was really hoping to do it in one fell swoop.

Re: Moving from 12.8.3 to 2019.12

Nothing to worry about. The older .ptf session format opens just fine in PT10 and later, and .ptx format introduced in 10.0.0 is still current. Going for a newer version is not a problem.

Re: Moving from 12.8.3 to 2019.12

I did the same as you - updated to W10 and from 12.4 to 2019.12.
The only glitch was Windows 10 populated my bios with a floppy drive.
That caused a 6 second delay in record and playback-after-record. Once I went into bios and removed (not disabled) the floppy all went well.

Thanks--this is good to hear. Would hate to think there'd be a problem with earlier session.

Thanks SO MUCH for suggesting this. I've started going to sites and I'm seeing that most of mine are outdated.

Re: Moving from 12.8.3 to 2019.12

One more question has come up: I'm currently using an MBox 3 interface.

The Avid instructions say to install the interface drivers before installing PT.

For 2019.12, do I use the HD Driver 2019.12 even though I have "regular" PT?

On the Avid page for MBox drivers, the information for the latest driver says it only supports up to 12.5, which is weird because I'm currently on 12.8.3.

http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/d...d/Mbox-Drivers

Hoping someone can weigh in on this.

Thanks.

Re: Moving from 12.8.3 to 2019.12

Supported and working are two different things. Sure it has been tested for High Sierra the latest and you can run 2019.12 on HS as a supported configuration. Anything beyond that and you are on your own.

HD driver is for HD hardware.

It actually means you can install PT first but you should not expect to see your interface show up until you have installed proper drivers

Thanks for the replies. I'm having no luck determining whether the most recent MBox 3 driver is compatible with 2019.12.

Hardware compatibility goes against OS.

2019.12 is compatible with High Sierra and mBox3 is compatible with High Sierra so yes, if you use High Sierra your combo is supported.

OS later than High Sierra is not supported but may very well work. You are on your own though.

Re: Moving from 12.8.3 to 2019.12

JFreak,

Thanks for your reply.

As I said at the start of the string, I'm moving form Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro, then from 12.8.2 to 2019.12.

(I'm not on a Mac.)

If it's strictly tied to the OS, the latest MBox driver should be fine based on this:

1.1.10 Dec 16, 2014

Fixed: The "Updates" button in MBox control panel referred to outdated page
Supports Windows 7, 8, 8.1 & 1.1.10 Dec 16, 2014

Fixed: The "Updates" button in MBox control panel referred to outdated page
Supports Windows 7, 8, 8.1 & Windows 10
Supports Pro Tools 11.0.x - 12.5

Supports Pro Tools 11.0.x - 12.5

No problem: Appreciate your guidance.

At least now I'm pretty confident that since the MBox driver works with Win 10, I don't have to replace my interface immediately.

Thanks.

Re: Moving from 12.8.3 to 2019.12

So I'm about to close Win 7 for the last time, install Win 10, then install PT 2019.12 tomorrow.

I backed up my Pro Tools folder that's in the Documents folder, which has the gazillion plugin presets I've created over the years.

Is there anything else related to PT that I should back up, such as I/O settings?

I also saved my Trasher backups folder. Will I be able to insert this in my Trasher folder once I'm on Win 10/PT 2019,12 and restore using Trasher?

JFreak 02-16-2020 08:32 AM

Re: Moving from 12.8.3 to 2019.12

IO settings are usually easier/faster to re-create than backup and restore :D

dg27 02-16-2020 08:36 AM

Re: Moving from 12.8.3 to 2019.12

Thanks, JFreak. I'll just do that.

What about restoring my prefs using Trasher? Will that work if I insert the old Trasher folder in my new install and run Trasher?

JFreak 02-16-2020 08:37 AM

Re: Moving from 12.8.3 to 2019.12

Don't know about Trasher, but prefs file is just a file you can backup/restore

Thanks. That's what I did. The folder has these files

DefaultProToolsMIDISetup.dms
DSIPrefs
InstalledAAXPlugins
Last Used
Mbox
Pro Tools Prefs.ptp
Recent Files
Recent Folders
Windows Audio Device

Does that sound right?
