MARKERS!!!!

Can anyone tell me how to color code markers, or the distance between two markers on the marker bar at the top? When you open the color pallete under the windows menu, you see "markers" option but it's grayed out. How do I do this? Thanks!

If your using 7.x go Setup>Preferences>Display>Default Region Color Coding and Check Marker Locations.
