My workflow:
1. auto-save every 3 mins (seems to be working fine)
2. manual saves
3. Save-as with a new session name every once-in-a-while, i.e. MySession01 MySession02 etc
4. backup backup backup

Hi,

Auto save set to every minute and never had a crash due to auto save.

As mentioned it doesn't save when the transport is running, or audiosuite is processing etc.

Only issues ive seen over the years are with certain plugins, mostly VI's that also have to save their settings, so a large sampler plugin could have to save a lot of info or could be the cause of problems, especially if the samples are stored on an external drive.

This seems to be the case. I monitored my backup folder and it would not create a save file until I stopped the transport after making a change. So stupid though considering you can CMD+S during playback. I don't see what the difference is.

Obviously in a perfect world we would all actually remember to CMD+S every 5 seconds, but as you all know, when you're in the flow of a mix, it just doesn't happen that way every time.
