Have you ever burned?
 

Last night I installed the new Digi plugs (Bombfactory). I was working on a session, an applied the BF76 to an aux track. After a few minutes, my computer started to make an obnoxious buzz sound. So, I quickly turned off my monitors and plugged in a set of headphones. Then, I closed out of the session - still heard the noise. Exited from Pro Tools - still heard the noise. During all this, I smelled something burning (electrical). I thought the smell was coming from my monitors, but came to the conclusion that it was the computer.

My computer runs very SMOOTH, I've never had any problems with it. I use it strictly for audio only. Does anybody have any ideas on what went wrong? I've haven't turned on the computer since last night, but I'm a little worried that something is ruined.

WOW, better turn it off, umplug and open up the case and see what it was.

Thats happened to me when a power supply went on me...

If both dries were continuing to work, it's most likely a cooling fan. If you are computer savvy, open it up and manually move the fans, you may find one that feels stiff or uneven in it's rotation. If so, replace it. If not, you can try powering up with it open to locate the noise.

Otherwise take it to your locale repair tech, or contact the manufacturer if it's still under warrantee.

Sorry to hear...on the brighter side though, there are only two (well...)likely causes;
1)power supply
2)CPU fan

These are fairly inexpensive to replace.
Open the case and look for obvious burn signes.

Hello again,

I opened up my computer today, and both fans are fine. When I turned my computer on, sure enough, the noise was still coming through the head phones when at the desktop, but no burning this time. I opened a session, but couldn't hear any audio at all (when I record enabled a track, used midi, or tried to play recorded audio), very strange, just the "buzz". I emailed digi about this one...any more final thoughts, anybody?

I'm using the 001 box, didn't mention that in my last post. Any chances on the sound card being ruined?

Something burned, and something doesn't work now - so I'd say that's a possibility.
