Gibson kills off Cakewalk

Saw news of this in another forum: http://www.cakewalk.com/Gibson-Announcement
I know we have some ex-Sonarites here; I myself got my start in digital recording with Sonar 3, then Sonar 5 and lastly Sonar 8. The s/w was originally called Cakewalk then Sonar. First daw s/w to have track freeze and other developments.

Now I know why they stopped development of a Mac version - must have seen the writing on the wall long ago.

Amazing! This was my first digital software also. Started out on the original cakewalk and still have Midi song files that were synced to an Alesis D4 drum machine and one of the old Roland desktop synths. I guess that’s how the ball bounces. Bigger companies have been eliminating the competition with buyouts for years. Even though I only use it to play my old songs back anymore I hate to see this.

Gibson has a history of doing this.

They did it to Opcode.

I remember that :(

Given that history I would have to guess they're not going to sell off the intellectual property and just consign Sonar and the synths they made for not just for Sonar users but other users to the dustbin of history.

Wow, I remember editing songs for a CD with this software....late 90's early 2000's.

Really light stuff not major editing.....those CD's were all recorded on ADAT's.... :D

Reminds me of what Tascam did to GigaStudio.

Re: Gibson kills off Cakewalk

I began using a Cakewalk midi sequencer in 1994. Been using Cakewalk/SONAR since, having endured their many pricing/payment iterations. Finally bought the lifetime update option...just in time for Henry J. to kill it off. I'm very disappointed. So, I just bought PT 12 with perpetual license, and I'm prepared to learn how to use Pro Tools. This forum will make the transition much easier.

That lifetime upgrade was Henry grabbing some cash before he killed the goose.

Is it possible to convert or render Sonar files to work in Pro Tools?

Unless Sonar has an option to export as OMF(is that the correct term?) the easiest solution will be to consolidate each track and export the audio files. Re midi files, if you are using VI's that might not be available on a PT rig, best to print them to audio as well:o Having said that, your present Sonar rig might run for several years, just as it is:D
