external fire wire drives

need some advice please...

I'm planning to buy an external fire wire hard drive for my G4 400 to use for Final Cut Pro.

I currently have a 40 gig to use for audio, but I want to keep my audio pt sessions and video on seperate drives.

I was thinking of putting an external HD together myself.
I saw an apple external harddrive casing for about 100 usd.
An IBM 60 7200 goes for about 200 usd.

Do you think I'm better off just buying one already assembled?

What are some good affordable drives out there?

What should be looking out for?

Also,, id there any way of upgrading my G4 400
to a faster processor. How much would it cost?

thanx fotr the help

Re: external fire wire drives

I just got a firewire drive from OWcomputing. The delivery was stolen and a replacement shipment arrived in less than a week, with Christmas being dead in the middle of the time frame. I went with their house brand because it had an 8MB buffer and the Oxford911 chip.

They have good prices on everything and great service. Sure you could save $45 by purchasing a drive and enclosure and putting it together, or you can buy theirs and it works.

AN 800MHz upgrade for an AGP G4 Mac is $500. for 1GHZ - $700

Sorry if I sound stupid, but I was considering purchasing a LaCie 120GB external firewire drive. What kind of rack ears do I need so I can integrate it into my rack system?

Thanks!

Why settle for one drive, when you can have several. http://www.npstudios.com/fwdock.html

Easy assembly, low cost, and you can build to any size. Oxford 911 chipset for PT comatibility.

Hope this is helpful.

What about these adapter boards
anyone know how they stack up against off-the-shelf drives?
