OT: Mic Stands Vs Rubberized Clips for Tom Mics.

I wouldn't mind opinions here from some seasoned pros..

I've been miking kits up for donkeys years now using Mic stands, but am getting increasingly fed up with all the clutter, esp with metal drummers who *insist* on using 5 toms ! (less is more i know, but try telling that to an 18yr old)

Is there a big sonic disadvantage to using those rubberized mic clips, that live sound engineers are so keen on ?

Is there even an advantage? (less sound reflection from 5 mic stands for example)

..thoughts please folks

x

I switched to Sennheiser E-604s, and love them. I did modify the 604 clip mounts (slightly) in order to enable closer placement. They sound great, assuming the drums are tuned properly !!!

Some people prefer the Sennheiser e904. http://www.sennheiser.ca/main.php?node=ct_01&pro=253 and a lot of people use the Shure Beta 98 live. However I have not done enough direct comparisons to have a strong opinion on whether or not there are shortcomings with these clip on mics vrs a Sennheiser 421, or EV RE 20. Also, a lot of people use large diaphragm condenser mics on toms, stands required of course.

I've been using these for ages:

Better than mic stands, IMO.

These clips from Audix have worked well. Their D2, 4, and 6 mics perform quite well. I have done blindfold tests with 421's and these and have confused a few folks.

The guitar cab "grabber" is great as well. SB

i dont think it would make much difference i use stands and clips depends on the drum kit. sometimes it is hard to get a clip to clip on to the right spot of the drum if the drummer likes his cymbals low enough to be in the way.

also some of these drum clips dont work on all types of drum rims.

I had those too, but they're getting loose rather soon and are easy to break. Once I destroyed my third Audix clip, I switched to K&M and could not be happier. They're built like a tank.

I use e604's too and although I like them, I always wonder how much better other mics would sound. I mainly love them because of their size, clips and sturdiness and they seem to sound just fine. Anybody compare the e604's with the e904's? I have used the ATM25 as tom mics at a local studio and they sounded amazing! 421's seem to sound great from what I have heard. But man! They are big and clunky.
