Go change the pan depth , pan a track and you'll hear what it does...

This is explained in the PT 9 documentation (IIRC in the What's new document).

It controls the level of the channels at center pan. -6 dB of left and right give you mono compatibility (same signal on left and right) (no increase in level as the pan moves through center). But for less well correlated signals from left and right, this can cause a dip in loudness, so other curves are used where the center level of each channel is reduced less: -4.5 or even only -3 dB.

What was the pan depth in previous versions? (I'm guessing -6 dB)
I just tried a quick google search looking for the set pan depths in different DAWs but got nothing...

What is it in Logic? Nuendo?

Don't know about other DAWs but the PT 9 What's new doc says previous versions of PT used -2.5 dB. That's the default with the new option and automatically set for sessions created in older versions.

Maybe people should read the what's new document before posting.

Haha I guessed wrong. but, yeah, I couldn't remember seeing this in the PT9 FAQ. (I'm always adjusting fader level after a pan change, but damn... a 3.5 db difference is noticable)

I'll go read the "what's new document"

You might check out this basic explanation of pan depth (or Law). It's referring to Logic but the principles are the same:

And here's further discussion which gives even more info:
