I just tried a SRC experiment;

I’ve been working a lot at 48 x 16 because of this video project I’m on. Some of the material that I have done might go onto my demo CD. However, I really hate the way audio sounds after doing a sample rate conversion, but I did do a “tweak Head” SRC as a test with a 1 minute file (this took incredibly long...) So then I had a brain storm . Why not pull out the old Sony Mini Disc player that has been collecting dust for the last 2 years and try recording the original 48k file to it in real time through the analog inputs of the MD player?

So after doing the transfer, I opened a 41.1k session in LE. I imported the software converted file and then recorded the audio from the MDP back into LE via the optical i/o’s so that I could compare the sonic quality of the two files within the same 44.1k environment.

Now I realize that the MD format uses it’s own proprietary compression scheme but, let me tell you, the MD recording really did sound noticeably better than the software SRC I did within LE!! I couldn’t believe it.

Granted that both methods did not yield “fantastic” results when compared to the original 48k session master but at least it would appear that the MD alternative is a little bit less of a compromise when compared to a soft SRC, at least in my case.

The result of my test has me considering the possibility of purchasing a real time CD recorder for critical SRC’s. Might just be the way to go...
