Midi Connection Problems

Good evening, I've got PT M-Pwrd 7.3.1 running on a laptop Pentium 3.06, 2 gigs of RAM, with Project Mix I/O as the DAW.. I've got the 'ol Roland D-20 keyboard hooked up and use it mostly through the mono output directly into one of the Project Mix inputs..

Now I'm finally trying to set up the Roland so I can use the Midi and this is where my expertise goes straight to the rank beginners heap, and I'm stuck in the muck!! No offense to any rank beginners!!! I've got the Roland connected Midi out to Midi in on both the Project Mix and the Roland, so I think I'm o.k there.
I go to Setup- Midi-Midi Studio Setup, and I Create a new studio..Manufacturer - Roland, Model-D20, Input Port and Output Port are both set to Project Mix Control Surface.. I'm a little hazy on the send/receive channels as to, do I need to specify 8, as there are 8 faders on the Project Mix, or can I just go 16?

The problem is, once I create the Midi Studio and enter the input/output data, I get this message:

! - Pro Tools is unable to communicate with HUI. Power cycle HUI and check it's connections. Note, if HUI is not in use, update the Peripherals dialogue to prevent further warnings....!!

From then on I'm hitting the OK button on the warning in order to go to these other steps..

Next I go to Setup- Peripherals and under Midi Controller, the first option is HUI, then both the receive and send spots are populated with Project Mix Control Surface Midi..
Then I'll open a second HUI, and this time the Input and Output ports are set to the Roland d20.

I'll keep hitting the OK on that error message to continue entering data.

I'm stumped. Like I said earlier, I've turned off and on all three pieces of hardware and this warning always comes up if there are two options in Peripherals for the HUI... It doesn't matter if Project Mix is listed first or the Roland keyboard is.
The only way I can do anything from here is to delete the midi studio I've created and get rid of the second Peripheral, the Roland.....
That there is my problem... What is it I'm missing when it comes to the setup of the keyboard... Is there a step I don't know? I'd appreciate any thoughts and directions on this... Thank you in advance very much, RichrdC
