The 1272, X73, X81 all have their own sound such as the 1073 & 1081...... the X73 has less cuts of course!
New & Used 1272s on eBay (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&ht=1&query=vintech+1272)
Vintech Audio website (http://www.vintechdistribution.com/pages/599615/index.htm)

I cannot make a choice for you, you must do this on your own, because our ears and aplications are different! Do a search on the DUC (http://duc.digidesign.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=search) or GearSlutz (http://gearslutz.com/board/search.php3?s=dfb9f7b720bea55c18fb98865727cda1)

Good luck in your choice(s) images/icons/wink.gif

The Neve 1073 has a class A mic preamp, which was similar (identical?) to a 1272. The 1073 is the warm round Neve module. It has 3 bands of EQ and a low cut filter.

The Neve 1081 has a class A/B mic pre. Its mic preamp is brighter, punchier, sizzlier. It has 4 bands of EQ and a low cut filter.

A lot of folks like the 1073 for bass, fuller guitars, vocals, and some prefer the 1081 for drums, percussion, brighter guitars, anytime you need more snap.

I think of the 1073 as being the classic Neve sound, and the 1081 as being a Neve that's somehow a little more API like.

The Vintech site seems to say that their class A 1073-modelled mic preamp is found on both their x73, and x81, so the difference in models is due to other features, such as an extra band of EQ.

I haven't heard the Vintechs, but I've had great results with an actual 1089 (electronically identical to a 1073) from:

http://www.BrentAverill.com/

He also makes his own 1073 clone, which I would guess is pretty faithful to the original.

I have found that with a pair of Averill 1073s (or check the 1089s they are identical and cheaper), a pair of API 312s (also from Averill), and a Focusrite Red 1 Quad preamp, that I have almost every situation covered. I have other preamps, but those three are the three that get used most consitently.

They play well off of eachother too. Different tracks sit well against eachother in the mix when they were recorded with different preamps. Using preamp color as a choice helps the sounds to have plenty of personality before they go into the converter.
