Some people say, the XL7 has the better sequencer, but in almost every other aspect
the MC909 has more functionality and better sounds.
Aspecially when you're into dance, R&B, Pop etc. it's a brease to create a track.
I use the MC909 to produce groovetracks which I export over the MC's USB connection
to the Mac as wave-files. Import them in ProTools. Ready.

I would just get a sampler and call it a day. Spend the money one some good sound (unless you like to make your own) and just map them out. I'd even rather get a well-fitted MPC2000XL than either of the boxes you're referring to.
