I'm working on a Prog-Rock project that is a meter & tempo change nightmare. When I finish this, I'm going to be a master of the tempo and meter rulers, but I need some serious help. Here are a few problems I'm having.
1. I need to insert some measures at a given meter and tempo. The song is locked to a grid that already has meter and tempo changes throughout it. I can use the shift function to move the audio around, but you can't shift the meter and tempo rulers. I tried cutting and pasting all the audio and rulers, but that wouldn't let me put it all back just a few measures later. I think I need a better understanding of the edit modes (I'm mostly in Grid mode because everything is locked to that meter and tempo map I created), but I just can't seem to grasp a clear understanding of "WHY" I might need to change between modes. For instance, I need to be in grid mode to grab selected bars, but maybe I need to change to spot mode (after making the selection) to place everything back in a specific place. I seems like a simple enough task to add a few bars here and there, but it doesn't play out that way when meter changes are involved.
2. I don't understand why all the meter changes and markers follow the moving of tempo changes when you slide a tempo change marker, but the opposite doesn't occur when you slide a meter change.
3. I can't seem to slide a meter change with "the finger" even though the manual says I should be able to.
4. Pre-roll and post-roll have me completely baffled when the measure(s) before and after have meter changes. Keep in mind that I'm spotting in bars/beats. I've tried to do the math, but it never seems to work out like I think it should. As an example, I type in 2 bars, and it might change it to 1 bar, 3 beats.
5. The 2-bar count-off in the midi section of the transport window seems to get totally fooled by the meter changes sometimes.
I've tried lots of approaches and tried to school myself. If you can offer any insight, please help. I think I could benefit from someone helping me THINK about what's going on from a different perspective. I keep reminding myself that the audio files "are not changing", but the midi stuff is following the tempo changes and meter changes. What are the implications if a 7/8 bar with midi notes gets changed to a 4/4 bar while I'm cutting and pasting the meter ruler?!?! This is the kind of thing that's really confusing me. HHEELLLLPPPPP!
