is a TT patchbay a much beter bet for preserving sound quality than 1/4"? Any suggestions for best brands?

If its anything, its a lesser quality bet due to smaller contact surface area. But its takes up a helluva lot less space. Actual differences in 2 units of similar quality are likely to be nothing or miniscule.

If you look at the actual physical contact, there really isn't much difference. In both cases its a flat spring on a round connector with very little contact. You will be happier with TT in the long run. Whichever you choose make sure to get nickel plated plugs and jackfields. It will pay for itself in no time when you factor in maintenance and abuse to the bay from bad connections.
