Is it possible to compress Pro Tools files with Stuffit for storage on DVD and unstuff them later. Anyone tried this with success?

I used compression with Retrospect with no problems.
Stuffing audio files has always been a "no-no"... strange things can happen when you want to get them back !
I don't know why,... but I've heard this so often, that I wouldn't dare stuffing anything to do with audio....

As far as I know, stuffing audio won't cause any problem (it's number redundancy), however you won't save much space (perhaps 5% of the original, not to mention the amount of time it takes!). I believe that the hearsay about compressing audio files refers to mp3 encoding/decoding.

Waves Trac Pac Pro works great for 16 bit files... I don't have Emagic ZAP, but if you need to compress 24 bit that's the way to go... don't use Retrospect compression scheme... its not optimized for audio... Waves will save you 20 to 70% of space...

I use DropStuff for the second back-up on CD-R. One can get about 5% gain with full limited mixes, but with session files (or with mixes of language course with spaces for repeat for example) one can get about 50% compression - not bad. Never had any problem - but remember - when something goes wrong , you loose _whole_ work, not just a a single corrupted file.
So - if you have time... http://duc.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

I back up to CDR using Retrospect Express with compression. But, as stated by others, compression of audio files doesn't gain you much.
