How are you all adjusting to working "all in PT' and with the ProControl????

Where I'm at.

General Pro Tools Software learning curve stuff:

I get lost easily on the edit page
I still havent got the hang of Memory locations as Zooms
Phantom 'hidden' tracks sound, and it takes me a while to hunt them dowm http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/mad.gif
Ditto for sends http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/mad.gif and to a lesser extent plug ins on hidden tracks
Clearing tracks and compact selected and save session to all - still stres's me out for fear of losing stuff.
I am a dunce with templates and cant seem to understand when to take raw tracks and slide em into one. http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/mad.gif this means I take forever to set up a mixer the way I want it for each tune as I come to mixdown http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/mad.gif
I get eye strain now.

PROCONTROL:

I dont use the channel matrix enough. Can you create a group on it, solo one, mute one????

I only use AT on the automation but seem to get along fine.
I am always clearing meters which is boreing.
I am ashamed to say I have never used the Status buttons, (and need to I am sure)
I do little asigning with the channel pots.
The decemel point on the Mins Sec display really piss me off. & I have put gaffer tape over the last two number windows - frames and tenths of seconds is just more eye madness to deal with.
I dont use the edit mode change buttons as much as I would like to.

GENERAL STUFF:
now I have a patchbay, I would like to get into bussing out to analog gear , then back again, to let me do some old fashioned tweaking! (but I cant seem to get round to it)
every thing seems to take twice (and more) as long as it used too!

there , thats where I am at, most of it is my own damn fault I know...

Digi, here's a question for you, because last night, switching the Millenium in the smell of my own breath ( combination of cheap champagne, expensive single malt, home made cappucino) I had a dream, What ????? YESSSSS I HAD A DREAM ....... lemme explain .........

Digidesign offered a FREE ALL EXPENSES PAID AND EXTRA POCKET MONEY training session (one week, 7 days should be enough) at the Waldorf Astoria in NY for ALL loyal ProControl DUCkers .......
During this week the schedule would be following :
between 08:00 and 09:45 : HUGE breakfast Buffet
10:00 - 12:00 : training session with Gannon explaining tips / techniques in front of the group while every trainee would sit in front of a 16 ch ProControl (only 16 ch to cut in the budget) to try out the stuff Gannon explains as the session goes along.

12:30 - 14:00 : FOOD ..... No Alcohol (yet http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif)

15:00 - 18:00 : Small groups (3 pers. max) to exchange experiences. These groups would have to change every day.

18:30 - 20:00 : FOOD

Evening sessions every other night ..... an assignment per specific section : channel matrix 1 night, DSP section another night etc .. ...
Every other night to have during this week at least 3 nights off to explore NY night life and spend pocketmoney (amount to be discussed ...)

The 7th day would be Examination day: for example ..... can't think of anything but you guys can surely figure s th out.

Anyhow, good thing I finaly found a PC friend in Maastricht, we didn't actually do it yet but where talking about it,...... PC afternoon get togethers ...... A big shout out to Belgian PC users, where the **** are you ...... (Plan B, Arthur, looking foreward to that e-mail with your contact info ........ )

Besides that, and I don't want to preach the wholy PC bible here, because I am probably the biggest sinner myself .....the only way to learn it is to obligate yourself to use it.

I "try to" obligate myself on an at leat once a week basis to grab the manual and do an hour of "educating myself" on the PC. You never get to do this during a job anyhow. And it is THE ONLY WAY. The Pro Control has many, if not mainly possibilities which at first are quicker and handier with the trackball, why, ???? because your used to doing it that way and habbits change very difficult. It is like stopping smoking sometimes. The assigning with channel pots for example, is a real pain at first but I decided one day to ONLY do it this way ..... PT is a lot about setups and templates, a lot of it's true power lies there. Once you custumize the name fields to something that is "readable" on the PC, it gets a lot easier and after a while , I've gotten the "feel of the pot turn" to almost instantly turn the put to the desired in /out put. Same thing with the dsp section for assigning plug's for example .......

As for the Channel Matrix Jules,.... It is a VERY powerfull section. My most used features there are : creating / suspending / viewing groups. also, mute / solo views of "hidden" (not on the fader) tracks in combination with the goto button.

As for the min/sec display, same feeling here ..... I only use the bars/beats and especially, the timecode view, this last one does not have the min/sec problem.

As for setting up the mixer and creating templates, s.th. you realy should do, I think 5.1 is going to be a HUGE step for PC-kind ........ Putting on/off line plugs without eating dsp (an offline plug that is) will enable us to say ..... create a 32 track / 8 aux / Master .... session setup with the most common used plugs (offline) on every track allready there when you create a new one. Also fader controlled plug editing. And as far as I can remember you can now create for every template a REALLY customised version of your in/out/busses,..... not only the names but if you Never Ever use more than , say 16 busses, you could ask the new matrix not to see the other 48 (64 in 5.1), same for ins and outs .... get rid of the never used ones and give easy usable names to the ones left over and after that ..... swing the pot Jules.


And digi, please give us the ****ing TRIM/SCRUB

Nice dream, Chris! There should be something like that somewhere, sometime. There is so much you can do on a ProControl! It would be great to meet some of the folks on the DUC as well.

Jules, "Can you create a group on it, solo one, mute one????" Absolutely! Use the 'Select' button in the Groups master section. That selects the members of the group, then switch to MUTE or SOLO and you have already identified which members you're after. I love that feature.

Has anyone considered taking AVID certified ProTools courses 135 and 235? Do you have operating questions on PT or Pro Control? Consider Omegastudios.com. I just got back from the "Up and Running" class at Audio-One in Miami! Marko, (the instructor of the class) did a great job! I took 2 relitively new users from our company and they really benefited. I also took the class (and will be there next week for the certification classes) as well. I've been on Pro-Tools for more than 2 years now and even learned several tips that will help my speed! Highly recomend it.
