It's like my Mission control, with an extra joystic, keyboard forward in a more convienent place and far less 'hot key' buttons. Cooler looking, much more expencive I belive!

Chris

Just got back from recording Flamenco direct to PT in Seville, Spain. Have read about all the new PT gear and would love to see the pics of the EP too!

This feels like something sordid!

Please send them to home2@tesco.net if you have a minute - many thanks.

it was at AES in LA and it's a beaut. If I had a ProControl, I'd be buying one right now -- and it certainly makes the PC look better to me for the future. the colored QWERTY is besically the same thing as those key stickers that came with 5.0 -- which is the same basic idea as the Avid keyboards. I think the cost was about $4 large, but I'm not sure on that.

comparing to other PC features like the extention, $4K is probably a good estimation, although just for once I hope digi makes a one time limited sign in offer which one simply cannot resist. How about $1K limited time offer digi ?????

And if I give you my nicest smile ?????

I saw the Edit Pack at AES and thought it was a great addition, however the expected price as quoted by the Digi guys was more like in the 7K range. I thought this to be quite expensive for a couple of joysticks a keyboard, trackball and $900.00 Gallery edit keyboard. I say all this as someone who sprung for the full 32 channel Pro Control for my new room. At this price, I will look into some other custom arrangement and have it built into the desk the Pro Control will be housed in. I'm not sure Digi can substantiate the cost on this one.
Just my observations,

What else ??????????????????????????? http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Q's :

1. what are all the buttons above the joysticks for ??? extended monitor section ??? editing buttons ???

2. Can I play Carmageddon with the joysticks when PC is offline ???? http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/shocked.gif http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/cool.gif http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif

buttons above the joysticks are dedicated edit buttons. I can't remember any specifics, but it's basically shortcuts for commands that they didn't have room on the QWERTY keyboard for. I wish I could tell you that they're user definable, but sadly they aren't.

they should write a version of Robotron for the joysticks. that'd be awesome.

Played with the Edit pack at the AES, awsome piece of equipment, especially if you have to mix in surround format.
Price quoted was $7995, shipping in January 2001

hmmmmmm now with the edit pack having all those glorious meters howabout writing into the firmware BEFORE it gets released that those meters can also work with Plugins..........I can't tell you how handy it would be to have a gain reduction meter for the compressors on the ProControl.

Greetings all,

I apologize for being absent on the DUC for the last while. Iíve been very busy working on Edit Pack to get it done and shipping as soon as possible!

In response to some questions/issues. First, the msrp is $7,495 not $7,995 (every little bit countsÖ) This is an expensive box for us to build. The keyboard itself is highly customized. It starts as an off the shelf part, and in the end, the only pieces that get used as is are the keyswitches. We even modify the pcb so we can put the modifier keys in the best place and offer a duplicate set to the right of the space bar. Sounds trivial but is very significant engineering wise. I specíd this to be the easiest to use keyboard we could make and it costs dearly to make it right. Iím a user too and I wanted to get it right, for all of us!

The joysticks are also quite unique. They use the same touch circuit as the DigiFaders on ProControl. They feel absolutely great! Making them has been a big engineering challenge.

The Edit switches are organized into 4 sections with 5 buttons, each with an over/under function. The Main functions are:

MISC: Bounce to Disk, Shift, Duplicate Track, New Track, Auto Input/Input Only toggle
REGION Ė SHOW/HIDE: Consolidate, Heal, Show Selected Tracks, Hide Selected, Show All
EDIT: Trim, Duplicate, Repeat, Insert Silence, Repeat Paste to Fill
AUTO/WRITE: Start, End, All, to Current Parameter, to All Enabled Parameters

The Alt functions are:
AUDIO: Import Audio, Import from other movie, Import Track, Timestamp, Beat Detective
MIDIĖEDIT: Select Note, Split Note, Transpose, Merge Paste, Input Quantize
MIDIĖCHANGE: Tempo, Meter, Velocity, Duration, Quantization
PLUG-IN SETTINGS: Copy, Paste, Compare, Save, Save As, Auto Suspend

Thereís also Track Size Up/Down switches that operate on the tracks you have a selection on.

Lastly, the meters do not currently do gain reduction, but itís something we have thought of and hope to do in the future. They are set up to display it, itís just not in the software.

So, I hope that answers the questions so far. Iím really excited to get this product out there. It got a great reception at AES, folks loved it .

Jules, it was nice to meet you in person! I wish we could have had more time to talk.

Since we're talking about a new piece of hardware... has anyone else ever wanted to have a visual indication as to what sample rate the session is at? In our post house, we always have different sessions at different rates and it would be nice to have that on the PC or Desktop.

I saw a Prototype today, on a 5.1 / edit Pack demo in Brussels. It was an almost working beta model.

Man, what can I say, other then I gotta run, gonna fill out some Lottery forms,......., I've got to have this thing.

No, seriously, it looked very very very nice. As I said, it was some kind of beta model, but except for the joysticks (the most important on the thing http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif) everything seemed to work OK. Everything Gannon describes in his reply is there, and some more fancy things.........

for example, the back has adb and usb ports, so basically, if I understood it right, you can throw out your keyboard. You can hook up the edit Pack to the Computer and it will serve as a keyboard, even offline. Two little minor things : 1. the trackball seemed a little bit on the small side. But then again, I'm used to the BIG Kensington. and 2. It is ok to throw out the keyboard, but how do you start the computer then ??????? well, by pushing the button on the computer. Ok, but mine is in a machine room in the basement. So it would be nice to see some powerbutton on there.

Basically, the whole edit pack concept is surround mixing (duh ....... http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif) and especially handy for people working with MMC, It has it's own dedicated section. So main clients will be the video folks I guess. BUT, there are some very very usefull functions and buttons, not only for surround ....... OK, you'll say, what's the use then for us music only folks ...... well, surround http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif........ of course and definately better looking then the Gallery version (mission control). I have to admit that it is a very expensive gadget, because all the shortcuts can be done on a normal keyboard in combination with stuff like quickeys etc etc .... but then again, you can mix with a mouse too http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif. I just wish the dollar would crash a little bit, or that my upcoming release goes triple platinum, or that my lottery forms win or I have to rob a bank or whatever, there has to be some way ............ I have to have this thing.

A price break for existing ProControl owners (got 2 of 'em) would be a REAL incentive, especially since _some_ owners were led to believe that the ProControl would gain some editing prowess with the existing hardware. Has this happened with v5.1 of PT? Gannon?

Lots of new ProControl stuff in 5.1. Notably Plug-in flip, Alpha latch mode, Auto Input/Input Only switching, full support for multi-channel panning and multi-mono plug-ins, and more. We really tried to address your requests and nailed most of them. If something is missing, most likely it's coming in the next update!

RE: Edit Pack, I wish there were a way to make it easier to get into, but there just isn't. We are barely going to be able to fill orders as it is. People who have seen it are ordering it without hesitation, so the demand is very high and our cost to produce it are high as well, so there isn't a lot to play with. All I can say is, it's worth it! I'm totally hooked on having buttons for often used operations and once you've mixed in surround with the panners, there's no going back.

Be cool!

OK just what the Sam Hill are you supposed to get up to with 2 panners?, Send Roger Rabit and Jessica's footsteps whizzing round the room in a chase scene?

So, I'm on the cusp of becoming a PC user, and I'm curious... it seems like there are a few functions repeated between PC and EP, and the literature states the EP requires PC, and I'm wondering... if you won't use the joysticks (bc you do music and don't mix in surround), is it worth it to have an EP with my PC?

Thanks all. Looking forward to hanging out in this forum more. http://www.digidesign.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif
