View Full Version : SSL Duende Channelstrip Crashing in ProTools 2018.3

I just installed ProTools 2018.3 and now the SSL Duende Channelstrip is crashing and quitting my sessions the same way it did in 12.7 and above. I got it to work in 12.8 with no issues and since have been using it until the recent 2018.3, some of the projects I reopened that has the Channelstrip inserted now just crash on playback....SSL claims it works in High Sierra/ProTools 2018.1 and 3 with no issues but it’s been horrible on my end. Any others willing to test or have the same issue? I’m disappointed in SSL, although they are moving into the digital age with their control surfaces which are software based, you would think they would update and focus heavily on their plugin line and make them compatible for users more than ever now that plugins are so widely used. There are other SSL style strips out there but I love the sound of the genuine SSL brand Channelstrip....

Have you tried reinstalling V5.1.3 64 bit?
I have Pro Tools 2018.3 running here with V5.1.3 with no issues.

Yes I did re-install 5.1.3 64 bit version, that didn’t help.....did you try adjusting parameters on the ssl Channelstrip while the session is in playback? That’s usually when it quits and crashes....

Vanilla....
hmm just checked 5.1.3 strip, engaged every function then disabled, moved every knob. Inserted a drumstrip in it's place, then put the channel back and copied it over to 8 other tracks and opened the gui's of all. No crash.
Perhaps there is some corruption somewhere with the OP's install, sadly.
download easy find from devon technologies. Make sure hidden files is ticked and search within files.
Do a search for the word duende.. delete everything (double check no system files) including the installer bom files.
Restart computer, and reinstall. Restart again. then try use.. i think will be ok.
problem is though, we have no idea what the OP's setup is. What OS?

I’m in High Sierra, updated to the latest state.
ahh my apologies there..
well it might possibly be a high sierra thing then sadly..
I can confirm sierra is no issue.. yet another reason not to update.. can't live without my duende!
But please do send the reports to SSL and Avid.

Yes both of them know and SSL says they are working on the issue. I been having a great time with the Brainworx Console E & G plugins, they both sound really nice, but something about the Duende Channel just sounds better to me.....like drinking a generic supermarket brand “Cola” when you can drink a Coke LOL!

oh sorry i don't get that at all.. the brainworx stuff sounds fantastic and even better.. they went to great pains modelling them..
I like the duende cause it's so light(lightest on the market), you can use 100's of them, and I am used to it, and yes it sounds pretty good.. but i'd be happy to use the brainworx in place of it everywhere if i had them.. I might eventually get them with the pick pack deal, we'll see.

Definitely send reports to Avid and SSL but I am on High Sierra with Pro Tools 2018.3 and I cannot replicate this issue on 6 different machines.
Or with Windows 10.
Here I have a 27" iMac, MBP15r and a Cheesegrater, 21" iMac and a pair of PC's (SSL Live Recorder and a Dell laptop).
Works fine on all 6 systems.
Here is Duende V5.1.3 working fine on the MBP15r:

Hi everybody!
SSL Duende plugins (ie. X-Verb) don't work on Pro Tools since 12.4. I think.
Is there any warranty for plugins? Because they claim that their latest update should work on Mac and Win 10.
If I bought a hardware - for example a guitar pedal and the company claims it works with every Fender Telecasters - and they give the product a 2 year warranty, I am as a paying customer in a position to have my money back, or a compensation, an other pedal/product.
Does this apply to plugins at all? If they can't fix it - please, say something at least. And give a similar product/plugin that works - ot give your customers their money back.

all working here perfectly.

The bug is real - it crashes the second you adjust the LF filter or other settings in the channel....but not all the time. Very random and difficult to test. Save and save often, that's the motto. There will be an update that fixes it, but for now it's definitely a major bug.

what sample rate are you using? I've only tested it at 44.1 and 48
And I am telling you, I simply can not get it to crash.
I even created 16 audio tracks and made them into a group, choosing to link only the plugin parameters (amazing feature by the way avid, i am certain no other daw can do *that*), and moved every single parameter which means all 16 plugins would have had their parameters moving simultaneously. I also automated ever parameter including the filters.
This is going to be very hard for SSL to fix if it's only happening on certain systems as they will need to work out what on those systems is different to cause the crash.

Hi again!
I can't make X-Verb running on Win10 Home with PT 2018.1 or 2018.3! Really miss that plugin. I have tried everything possible. Other SSL plugins are running smoothly.

On my Windows 10 it has been showing the 'not valid 64 bit AAX plugin error' since PT 12.6. Not sure who to blame as it just appears to be a Redistributable Package run-time issue. I moved on to alternatives.

It seems to happen whenever my track counts are 24+tracks with a lot of audio regions. I know my computer can handle high counts so it’s highly unlikely it’s causing the quitting. But I know what you mean!! The LF + shift control always crashes the session. I guess it’s a matter of waiting til SSL releases a new update, for now I’m using the Brainworx console E/G which has been sounding great...

I was on vanilla 12.4 , OS X Mavericks, and used the ch strip all the time. Got a new computer with Sierra and hdx 12.7. It hasn’t worked since. I did the 5.1.3 duende upgrade, and I’ve done all the PT updates- am now on 2018.3.
I’ve had to abandon the plugin. If I open an old session with the plugin, I have to remove all instances before pressing play in order for PT to not crash.
I don’t have a real substitute for it and am very annoyed.

I'm running version 2018.4/OSX HS and still haven't been able to get the Channelstrip working without any crashes. I been using the Brainworx Channel E and G but I still miss the sound of the SSL brand Channelstrip......hopefully SSL fixes this ASAP!
