The Control 24 is basically, a fancy mouse, with a monitor controller(that nobody thinks sounds good) and 16 mic preamps(also, that nobody thinks sound very good), So, your best bet is to simply use the surface as the great controller that it is, maybe use a few preamps for non-critical stuff, and use a good monitor/source controller(like the Presonus Central Station or Mackie Big Knob).

IIRC, the 18i20 has 8 mic preamps, 8 digital inputs(on lightpipe/ADAT) and 2 digital inputs(on RCA SPDIF). Since there is no direct connection that will work with the Control 24 preamps(which are analog out-only), your best option for more inputs is to buy an 8-channel Lightpipe preamp, such as:
Behringer ADA8200(the red one)(this is the best budget solution available)
Focusrite OctoPre Mk II(more mony, but not better sounding)
Midas XL-48(even more money, but sounds really good, especially on drums)
Food for thought:o
