View Full Version : Dealing with Clipping in Audio File

I have a vocal track that has a bit of clipping in it that was sent to me for a mix. There's no chance of having it re-done. Its only in a couple spots, but it is noticeable. Suggestions on how to deal with it? Thanks!

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do Donald. Izotope RX3 advance does have a feature of de-clip, but I have no experience with it; only read about it. But it's over $1000! Inform the client that that is a lesson in proper recording technique.

iZotope RX3 "normal" has the declipping feature, too.
Can, might, possibly, eventually work wonder, if the clipping is not too heavy.
(RX3, for me : a must-have)

Donald, can you make a small spot of the audio downloadable, so I/others might give it a try ?

Joachim...I should be able to do that. Maybe tonight before I can get to it.

I did inform her that from now on she needs to pay close attention to the input levels. Keep in the green, barely into the yellow! :-)

There is a demo of RX
If it's just a little bit of clipping, Pencil Tool it

Okay guys: here's the clip of the section with the clipping (https://soundcloud.com/sonic-creations/clipped-vocal-sample). Its 24bit, 48k sample rate, Wav.

If anyone can help out here, much appreciated!!!

Thanks!

Opening the link results in the message :
"Sorry! We can't find that track.
Did you try to access a private track, but were not logged in?
Maybe the track has been removed."

I can't access the file, either.

For de-clipping, based on how RX handles the interpolation, you'll want to keep an eye on your negative makeup gain. Depending on the file (and on the makeup gain level) you might need to activate the post-limiter, to avoid any clips that are re-created by interpolating truncated segments. Also be on the lookout for asymmetrical clipping. This can be evened out after repair with an additional limiter stage, preferably one with oversampling. And while RX3 is great, it's not perfect - minor aliasing can occur, but is much better than the sound of full-scale digital clipping. Easing back on the clip threshold can sometimes give a more organic-sounding result. For any clips that remain after a "broadband" pass at a higher threshold, you can treat individual clipping segments (or clusters of clipping segments) with a more aggressive threshold.

I hope that info was easy to digest. It sounds more complicated than it is.

Donald, you should really get a trial of RX3 and give it a shot. It's a great toolset to have on hand, if you can spare $230.

I thought if I set up a private file on SoundCloud and provided the link, you'd be able to access it. I'll have to change that. Sorry about that.

I don't think I can justify spending extra money on the RX for just one short segment of one song.

I'll try another way to share the file.

Okay, one more time: Let's see if this link will work (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/55193826/Bridge%20Vocal%20-%20Sample%201.wav) for getting the file. Thanks again for all the help guys! Much appreciated!!!

how can you dismiss a full functioning 10 day demo?
It will work in shorter segments after the 10 days

I didn't realize it was fully functional! I may get time to try that out..but I'm going to be away from my studio after tomorrow for a few days. As always...I never have enough TIME!!! :(

A rough RX. Mediocre, some portions I still totally do not like. Beyond me capabilities.
Did she move her head away from the mic sometimes ?

Joachim - I really appreciate you doing this! It does sound better than the original. As for what she did when she recorded it, I have no idea. She recorded this in her home studio, I think, and just sent me the tracks. I think she was trying to do some sort of back and forth effect. I may end up putting the two parts of the phrase she's singing on separate tracks, which may help deal with some of the clipping as well. I'll have to see.

Again, thank you so much!:cool:

Is there a way I can download it? I can't see a download link on the page. Did you activate it on Sound Cloud? Thanks!

I joined soundcloud today for downloading your sample, did not know about "enable download". Just did so.

Here's my attempt, with some manual work using Declip, Decrackle, and Deconstruct: https://soundcloud.com/alexeylukin/rx-1

FYI: the RX flow chart (http://izotope-rx.livejournal.com/3395.html) that I used.

Like the chart but what is after the last No? Tequila shots?

Alexey, I can't help but notice you're an iZotope guy.

Any recommendations for removing fret buzz from a particularly enthusiastic guitar recording? I've tried the deconstruct module with mixed results. Would Partials+Noise be a good supplement to deconstruction?

Donald, no thread hijack intended :o - it's a similar topic.

It's hard to tell blindly. Any sample?

No access to it until tomorrow. Would it be okay to send you a message with a link to the WAV?

I just know there's a better way to take care of it with RX3 than what I've been trying. I just don't get to use RX3 as often as I would like, since I don't own it myself. I haven't had the chance to flesh out these RX3 workflows as a result of that.
