First, there are lots of detailed tutorials out there but a quick answer might be……

Sound occurring in a space can be broken down into 3 basic parts: direct sound, early reflections, and reverberation. direct is the part that takes a direct path and arrives at the ear first. ER are the part of the sound that go out, strike a boundary and arrive at the ear a little bit later, usually under 100ms. Their frequency response and sound are heavily influenced by the materials that are covering the walls. So verbs named wood room, or tiled room, etc, are attempting to emulate what the ER in these spaces might sound like. Only through experimentation can you decide what reverb types you like and in what amounts.

quick, simple answer. Hope it helps.
