View Full Version : No low end…?

I'm currently experiencing a lack of low end in all of my mixes. At first I believed it to be due to a mastering/limiter I had on my master output, but the problem persists no matter what DAW (PT, logic, live) I try to use. I have had my current set up going on 2 yrs and have only encountered this issue a few weeks ago. Is something fried in my Mbox pro?

I apalogize, but could you be more specific please? electrically? acoustically? also I should have included that I have bounced my recent mixes and listened to them through various other systems (car, band PA) and still no low end. the mixes from before this issue all seem fine...

I honestly don't know. I don't remember anything odd happening.

Check automation. Also, you didn't happened to throw anything on the Master Buss did you?

Check your cables to your monitors. Also, see if this occurs using headphones.

It doesn't matter what system I listen through.

Do you have this issue outside pro tools listening to other music ?

Are you using any stereo widening pug-ins on your master fader? I've found that extreme settings with these can really mess up the low end.

Download the free FreqAnalyst plugin from Blue Cat Audio and put it on the final output of your mixes on stuff from before you had the problem and stuff since you've had the problem. This will at least tell you if the problem is in your setup or it's a room acoustics issue.

If you could give us a description of what exactly you have on your mixes in the way of plugins from before and after that would help.

When listening on ITunes, other artists and my older tracks seam to have the sub bass.

Solo them use the blue cat like jack requested and find out what happened to it.

Setting on a plugin maybe? Are you looking at all your inserts? A-E and F-J ?

I Just happened to think… I downloaded some free plugins off of the NI website (supercharger, guitar rig, kontakt). Could this have caused the issue?

OK so I downloaded the blue cat stuff. I have no idea what folder to drop them in. I'm on Lion 10.7.5

Install the filter analysis or the whole pack doesn't matter

It's just a quick check of what you expect to be seeing - that tracks that dont have low actually do have it on the track (we are most likely positive but you have to start somewhere)

Drag them to your plugins folder

Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Avid/Audio/Plug-Ins (AAX)
Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Digidesign/Plug-Ins (RTAS)

Pro Tools 10le
I would download the RTAS and AAX versions as PT10 uses aax; you can have both on your system and it won't hurt. Technically there's no such thing as PT10le, just PT10. There is one other version and it's called PT10HD.

When you unpack the installer a folder should open with the plugins in it, a readme and a folder alias. Drag the plugins into the alias folder and they'll get installed where they need to go. It's that way with all Blue Cat plugs.

Best way to know what's going on would most likely be to hear a recent mix of yours that is missing low end.

He is saying iTunes is doing the same thing

So look at the freq spectrum - make sure then start looking at hardware issues

Then assume the room is jacked

Rip a CD.

Place it into Pro Tools.

Bounce to disk (no plug-ins).

Then listen.

What happens to the bounce?

That's why I mentioned using the FreqAnalyst. I actually have that one, the Pro and Multi versions which are pay for plugins. Neat thing with the multi is you can put what I would call 'taps' in various places to see how the signal is being affected. Or you could put the 'taps' across different tracks for comparisons. And see that on one display - can't do that with the Pro or free version.

Could be the room is hosed or if there's switches on the back of the monitors to alter the freq response of the monitors due to monitor placement if they somehow got moved. Ask me how that one screwed me up big time (client wasn't too happy).
