I have noticed that my imac ODD fan has been running unnecessarily high rpms recently. The temp still looks normal, but could not get it to stop spinning up even after doing an SMC reset.
There's an app called SMCfancontrol that I've been aware of for a long time, but it only allows you to set a minimum speed for the fans.

So today I found an app that will give you complete control over the fans:

This is very useful for anyone who has upgraded/replaced the harddrive with a non-apple harddrive in a newer imac, or removed the optical drive and put an SSD caddy there instead(like me).
The app works great, but be aware it only allows control of the HDD and ODD fan, not the CPU fan(for obvious reasons). But as the 27" imacs start to age and need HDD replacements, (mine was one of the first ones and is now almost 4 years old) I think this app will become very useful.
