It's always the same, when a new version of PT is released.
That's just how it is, the cutoff has to be somewhere, and there will always be people who missed it and are angry now. But still, the cutoff has to be somewhere.

Listen to my friend, Jack Nicholson, because there's nothing else, you or anybody else can do:

Yeah it does. Really boggles my mind that Avid hasn't grasped the idea of backing the window up. Sorry if that applies to you. I bought way way back like in the 10.2 days so I'll be paying up-front. Doesn't bug me this time, though - some stuff in here I really really really want.

I feel your pain man. I switched from Sonar over to Pro tools when PT9 was current. I hadn't had it for more then 3 months when they announced PT10. I was shocked to find out there was no discount, no address from Avid, no nothing. Then I was assured that PT 9 would still be supported, which was complete BS (stopped at 9.06).

There was a lot of mad people around here at that time including myself. So I took the upgrade money I saved up around that period and instead up upgrading since there was no disk cache for non HD users and still was stuck on 32bit I bought Studio One, lol! I hold grudges sometimes. Im still on PT9! and Studio One is an amazing piece of kit!

I am excited for this release however! Finally some new stuff to get excited about. I hope they haven't gave away everything. I would like to be surprised with some new stuff they haven't mentioned yet tomorrow during their presentation.

Its Pro tools, you have to expect by now your wallet is going to have nothing but dust left in it after a new release

I bought it 3 days ago and I have paid $999, so they should give me a free upgrade. If not, the people who has PT 9 HD should pay more.
I'm on a strange line but they should take care of it.
Anybody from Avid should explain this. It's unacceptable.

Thanks to all.

No question about that. If avid doesn't offer an amnesty upgrade, talk to the dealer you bought it from.

That's great......but how the F is it okay that going directly from 9-11 is $200 cheaper than folks who already paid $300 to go from 9-10? WTF?

It's bad enough getting caught in a several week void due to secrecy of a new launch ....... But then to hear you are getting a double hit and that they are essentially getting a whole upgrade of $300 out of you for free.

Total BS! I would like to hear an Avid product specialist chime in in this. This feels like gouging to me.

I think they've lowered the prices in response to all the complaining last time. It stinks for the people who paid that, but I'm glad they're on this new path.

Its fair because, the people on PT9 never got the benefits of PT10, non of the features, bug fixes, additions or anything. You shouldn't punish people for not updating in a specific order, you got to enjoy your PT10 and for that you paid for it. Don't $%^& on other people because your mad.

I'd wait until tomorrow when they have the official release from Avid. I imagine there will be a grace period as they always have in the past.

I think you're right with that. Anyway if you have to pay $999 for an upgrade from PT HD 9 and I bought PT HD 10 3 days ago for $999 they have to response on that too.

This is my read on the situation also. Unfortunately there will be those that paid a higher price for the previous upgrade and are unhappy.

Also I'm going to guess this is the costliest version of Pro Tools to write. So the new prices probably represent some good will on the part of Avid.

Joe.......I have had PT 10 for a month and days. I have hardly used it....... maybe two short sessions and with several crashes.

So no.....I have not hardly used it and actually would not have bought it but for a friend is doing an indie movie and he asked me to score it. The project is on hold because he got a pilot...paying work.

But I was finally moved to go to 10 because I heard 10 handled bigger VI counts. It did not for me and was choking just like in 9....after 2 maybe 3 VI's. I wasted a few days messing with it before spending a bunch of time getting VEPro up and running and testing a slave computer vs running it alongside the DAW.

Then I picked up a run of work and had to be away from the studio.

I feel gypped my friend. Is that good after being a loyal Pro Tools/Digidesign/Avid customer going back to Digi 001?

Me too I just got it about a month ago - but that's what I get for holding out - truth be told sell your asset and move on

Heck bring a group/friends (in my case) in for a session and wa-la upgrade paid for

End of the matter if you want it you will find the cash b/c i sure will

Ldogg, for those reasons I agree with you 100%. If you saw my first reply in the thread you will see I had a very similar experience with pro tools 10. I am still mad about but I don't think users of other versions should have to bear the brunt of the frustrations.

I am excited about this release though. It looks like they may have got it right this time. Hope they will give pt10 users who upgraded less then 6months ago a break like a $99 upgrade fee. Since it will be hard to keep supporting the old code and refine the new one simultaneously

Can't wait for tomorrow! Track freeze, drag and drop editing, track folders, eleven rack stand alone, exrp 2, improved VI performance. Better more efficent routing? This is my wish list. What do you think is coming?

Track folders would be cool the new meters in the metering sounds really nice

30% taller meter in ProTools 11

Low latency input monitoring with plug-ins sounds like a direct response to the Apollo Which is great competition drives innovation

I really wanted to see the track hack or where you could in bed plug-ins and a template for new audio tracks or whatever

I think a reasonable thing to do would be to give a couple months back grace period.

Audioease gave 1 year when Altiverb 7 came out!

As for the CPTK termination/upgrade policy. This looks exactly like the way they dealt with the original DVTK when PT9 came out. However, they offered a special, limited time, lower priced upgrade deal towards the CPTK...

I don't see why this could not be done again.

What occured to me is that they're probably trying to tie back the HD features to the HD hardware as much as they can by eliminating the availability of the toolkit.

Pretty much what I reckon as well TBH. It all depends what differences there are between PT11 & PT11HD to see if it's actually worth it.

Before todays bombshell I was going to go PT11 + Apollo. It now looks as though I may be ditching PT all together as there's no way I'm forking out for Avid hardware.

I suspect there may be quite a few CPTK licenses appearing on Ebay in the very near future.

But, we live in hope & tomorrows Q&A might bring better news...

Well I stuck with 9 because 10 wasn't 64 Bit. Looks like a wise decision and now is the time to buy 10 so that when 11 is available I'll do the "version skip" directly to it.

BUT before I do, I need to know if there will be Delta 66 or 1010 drivers available as well as AIR STRIKE, Hybrid, Structure and few of their other products available as AAX.

AIR has announced ALOT of their stuff will be there on Day 1 but nothing on STRIKE or Hybrid tho an attendee at the NAB said they saw a new version of STRIKE there; new interface and purported to be running under 11.

I'm just a serious hobbyist but I really feel for those who have a tone of $ invested in RTAS.

Now Avid has said they are "not supported" but last night in the online conference I asked if RTAS plugins would "RUN".

The question was not even allowed to show up in the Q&A stream that was being fielded quite well by their staff.

That tells me the answer is "No".

Avid made clear a year and a half ago when PT10 was released that it would be the last version to support RTAS.

So the answer is definitively "no", and it shouldn't be a surprise. RTAS would never work in the new 64bit architecture.

And AIR is working on updating all their plugs to AAX. And yes, Strike AAX was shown in the video, as was AAX versions of Arturia, Toontrack, and Waves, even though they've not announced a timeframe yet for release.
