How do I compress a lead vocal and then automate?

If I automate my lead vocal track and add a compressor plugin will the compressor and automation be working together? If so, I would like to automate just a couple of rough spots. Is this possible?

Stick with the replies in your other thread. This thread is just taking up space. Volume Automation happens to the track, AFTER all the plugins, so that won't solve your issues(lots of good advice in the other thread). Maybe the web admin can delete this post?
