we are building a new worship center with the venue and hd for recording. i am having trouble figureing out the complete setup on the hd recording side. do we need to also get an interface in order to record to a cd burner and our other computer recording video? what about monitors? i read one post from 2004 stating that the sent the mix back to the venue and then out of the stage rack to record with video, what if we want to just record and not have a live event will this still work? i know the control 24 will work for mixing to protools by ethernet and and hd1 card will handle 32 channels of i/o right? what else will we need to be complete. thanks for taking time to help!

Madmiky -

this may be better posted in a different part of the D.U.C......

here's what i think might be the best hardware scenario:

use the VENUE as the interface into ProTools.

your ProTools computer should be locked to Time Code from Video (this would keep the audio and video sync'ed together).

you could have a stand-alone CD burner (hhb and tascam come to mind....) for recording live from the VENUE.

the audio would then be mixed in ProTools (with the Control 24 if you'd like) and sync'ed to video via the timecode.

i konw this doesn't answer all of your questions - hopefully it gets you moving in the right direction.

Hi,

Mike's response is a good starting point. In order to answer some of the specific questions it'd be helpful to know more about the recording workflow you envision.

Will the tracks be recorded through VENUE, then mixed in Pro Tools at a later time (and possibly different location)? Or...
Will the tracks be recorded through VENUE, and also mixed in Pro Tools at the same time (for a simultaneous broadcast or archive mix)?

Tell us a bit more about the application, we're here to help.

To answer one question:

hd1 card will handle 32 channels of i/o right?

Correct. However, in order to get the full benefit of the connection to VENUE a Pro Tools HD2 system (Core plus Accel card) is recommended. This matches the full 64 channel capacity of VENUE's HDx card.

No, most of the TDM guys wouldn't have a clue as to how to hook you up. To use all of the HDx option you need an HD Process or HD Accel card for each output. This will allow for 32 channels of bi-directional I/O per Digilink cable. If you have an operator available you can use the Control 24 as a Broadcast Mixer. This is what we do at my church. If you want to monitor off of a separate interface you will need an additional HD card, in other words, if you want 128 channels of ProTools recording, and you want to monitor from a 192, then you would need a total of 5 cards.

What I do instead is return my ProTools 2 mix to an unused D-Show FX return (FX16), which is then sent through the Direct Outs to the Video Team, and all of our independent campus feed using the Stage Rack outputs. Monitoring of the signal for the Control 24 rig is accomplished with the AES outputs at the FOH rack feeding into a an Alesis AI-4 to AI-3 combo. This is fed back to the monitor inputs of the Control 24. Works great.

this is great and your post was the one i got the most info from so thanks for responding! we will mostly mixing live for recording 2 track to cd and webcast of the sermon. occasionally multi-tracking to mix later. so if i understand than the 2 mix out of the pro tools goes back to the venue and then out of the stage rack where it can be sent to video and speakers in the control room? why direct outs for video? how does latency play. i read that it is only 2.8 ms from the stage rack to the console and back but what about with pro tools in the mix will i need a time delay on the video? where will the sync i/o live? near the console or video world? is there any other than the icon and the control 24 for broadcast mixing?
this is great i think we are geatly close. i want to get as much info before the demo comes.

One last question anyone know of someone in houston doing anything similar?

Hi,

The Sync I/O will live near the Pro Tools rig, which can either be located next to the VENUE console or in a separate room up to 200 feet away (the cable length limitation for HDx).

Let's get you hooked up w/ one of our product specialists, who will be in the Houston area in a few weeks. Fill out the VENUE info form (http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?langid=100&navid=20&itemid=22812&action=news_details) so he'll know how to contact you.
