Now we have quite a few of these things:

Garritan Personal Orchestra
the EastWest/Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra (EWQLSO) and it's several varieties
MOTU Symphonic Instrument
and now the HALion Symphonic Orchestra

What's the one to have, for around or under $500? I'm wanting it to fit into a film score environment.

uh...

I could maybe buy the harps for the amount I specified. They don't make a package that has a reduced set of complete orchestral instruments for less than four thou.

Pretty appealing, but I don't have Kontakt... must read more on that.

No, and perhaps that is the one to get? There you will get a selection of VSL-instruments for a bargain or Yellow Tools Independence..? What I wouldnīt buy is 16-bit samples like GPO... You have to define much more what you are after - usability or great sounds nomatter how hard you have to work with them, different type of bowing for the strings or just basics, good woodwinds which is easy to find or descent brass that is so hard to find... Donīt rule out Reason 3 all the symphonic instruments sounds better in that one then they do in GPO (except for the harpsichord, if thatīs not what you are after...)

Sooo in short - in that pricerange I would do for Reason 3+Stringrefill or Kontakt2.

I'm trying to simply learn MIDI orchestration, for the purposes of cutting a composer's cues in the sequencer, to allow for picture changes during the writing process. At them moment, I'm usually cutting audio, post factum.
