I'm thinking of getting the digi 002 rack and I'm just wondering how you guys are miking your drums with the rack.
My best guess would be use the 4 mic ins for 2 overheads, snare and kick and use the other 4 inst. ins for the toms. If any of you have a better way of doing this let me know.
Thanks
Larry

Currently, I'm using an external Mackie mixer, then take the inserts out to a half-normalled (i think) patch panel, and route that to my 002R via/ a Behringer ADA8000 (just for the A/D conversion). I've done several iterations of this and I'm still trying to determine which pre's sound best, the Behringer (NOT), the Mackie, or the 002R's, and if the A/D of the Behringer is different than the 002R, etc. One of these days I'll get a Digimax or Octopre though. That said, I did do some recording with kick, snare, and 2 overheads, and after a little EQ, it sounded great. Sometimes I wonder why I have mic's all over the kit...

the other 4 inst. ins for the toms

Remember that these other four inputs are line-level only, so a mic's signal won't be adequately amplified for recording. You can use 4 additional external mic pres to get four more signals into the 002R.

For some (most?), 8 channels is not enough, hence the octopre and digimax setups.

M-audio and Mackie also make 8-channel mic pres with ADAT output.

anyone actually using the Mackie Onyx 800R? How does it compare to the Digimax or Octopre? It's about $1000, but does 192Khz which the others don't (but then who cares if you have a 002R?). The Octopre is $800, but you need the ADAT card for another $200. The Digimax LT is $800 but only does 48Khz... I've seen these on eBay for as low as $500.

The Digimax LT is the best "bang for the buck".

I agree, the Digimax LT is awesome. I use it for tracking all of my drums and it gets a really warm and clean sound, very nice!

I use a mackie 1604 into my 002 rack with a behringer compressor/gate/limiter. I also use a patch bay so I can route the behringer to specific mikes. Great set up and I get a fantastic recording. RM

I run kick, snare, and two overheads through the 4 inst. mic pres and run two mic pres off an mbox to the 002 for toms. It works great!! ...and still I'm not even maxing the ins capabilities of the 002. Good Luck!
